I have been hunting pheasants since I was 14. However, I have never had my own dog. I’ve been lucky to have a few good friends over the years who have had dogs. I have always wanted one, but didn’t feel I was in the right situation to give enough attention. In the last couple of years, the itch to have my own dog has grown. On top of that, I have finally settled down. Having a wife seems to keep me at home a little more
Late last fall I was fortunate enough to be in a position that I could adopt a fox red lab. He had already been trained in basic obedience and had a little work with waterfowl. However, I’ve never hunted waterfowl. I was hoping he would take to pheasants.
Last weekend I joined a local hunting club to get him some experience and see what he could do. I wasn’t disappointed. They put out 6 birds for us. We heard a rooster flush wild right when we started, so we were down to 5 birds we knew were in the area. He ended up flushing 3 and catching one on the ground. He made great retrieves on the first two birds, but hung up ten feet away on the last one. All in all I was very happy with his performance. He is a good house dog, so I already knew I had a good buddy, but now I know I have a good hunting buddy, and I couldn’t be happier.
Sorry for the pic quality. Unfortunately I forgot my camera at home, and all I had was my phone
