Lots and lots of walking found few birds for me this weekend. I did not find birds where I typically do most of the day. I ended up cursing a new pair of boots vowing to never put them on my feet again.
Rain kept me out of the woods on Sunday but I declare this a successful hunting weekend as my wife and I will be eating fresh Grouse tonight. I ended up with 2. How did everyone else do????

Hearing them would have been nice. They simply were not there were I hunted. Hopefully this weekend in MN is a lot better.
PS-I saw so many wolf tracks where I hunted it was creepy.

Ditto to your experience, Mike. I put a lot of miles under my boots this weekend and only moved a few birds. The dog simply did not get into them. Opening day, the 8 miles of trail I walked produced 2 flushes. I bagged one and passed on the next due to the dog busting the bird…..not holding point = no shot.

I was disappointed with the results, but there is a lot of season left.

On a side note – I found the opposite of what you found regarding wolves. Last year, there was fresh wolf scat all over the place – I found over 2 dozen piles on opening day. Same trail this year – ZERO fresh wolf sign. I am sure they moved on – or some locals thinned them our – or more likely a combination of both.

I didn’t make it out as I had too much on my plate, plus the rain didn’t really get me very motivated, but am hoping to run the dogs a little with a friend who did get out and flush five, none down, too many leaves for him, this Sunday after Beefarama!!!

Me and friend didn’t have any luck last 2 weekends around Mille Lacs area. We only flushed one that we didn’t see. Very quiet out there!

Maybe there was too much traffic (we went Sunday)

My southern spots have been dwindling the last several years. Mille Lacs, McGregor, Longville, etc. Unfortunately I found the far north the only place that is consistantly decent.

Sweat Equity???? Sunday a.m. at 8:00 it was 62 already!!! Managed 15 flushes, one shot op and one young bird that didn’t want to get out when my bro’s lab got in on it, so one bird without any lead. Leaves are mostly gone after last week’s blow, now just need it to cool down a little bit, so the dogs can go a little longer.

Sounds nice. I put in a solid 3 hours Sun morning without a flush. Tried some new private land with a friend in an area I have given up on.

My only disappointment was forgetting the extra t-shirt to change into after the walk… My bro’s dog doesn’t do well in the heat and only made it for 30-45 minutes, some type of malady I can’t remember the name of it, but we had 8 up in that time and we were only 200 yards from the truck, made the walk down the 800 yards through the aspen slash and half way back flushing or reflushing the next 7 or so before being gassed. Only real bad thing was the leg cramps last night just after I fell a sleep!!! So I need to do it some more too!!! I had to go get some stuff in Rhinelander this a.m., but gonna pull my arse outta bed in the a.m. tomorrow to get another 60-90 minutes in with the lab.

I know what you mean. We had a pretty full day Sat followed by some partying. On top of that I forgot to bring water Sunday. Up and down the hills and most woodlots were on the backside of the crop fields. We walked it all. I was dragging and pretty stiff later in the day. Everything back to normal Monday morning. It was a suprise hunt. Otherwise I would have prepated better. It did open my eyes though. Extending my daily walks until pheasant season is over to see if that helps.
