What a great weekend to be out chasing pheasants! On Friday my buddy Travus and his Dog Shorty met Jazzi and me for a day of hunting. We hunted near the Willmar area and found that all the small sloughs were frozen solid and there was an inch or two of snow in most areas.
Two minutes into the hunt and Jazzi was on point. Out popped a couple hens that dropped down in the next slough we were going to hunt. This was the story for the rest of the morning. Jazzi would lock them down, out would come 2-5 birds and Travus and I would drop one. We were able to get our 4 by noon, but it wasn’t easy.
On Saturday my cousin and I hit their 120 acre farm near Swift Falls. We saw a ton of birds flush while we drove in, and unfortunately that ended up being most of them. I crippled one that we never recovered, otherwise the only birds that held tight were hens. Suprisingly all the birds were in the light grass cover and we saw no tracks or birds in the cattails.
On Sunday Jazzi and I headed out on our own for a couple hours. We walked a ditch and a slough and went one for two on the morning. Jazzi put both of the birds up at my feet, but again my shooting failed us. The other one I just barely hit, but Jazzi was right on it when it hit the ground.
