On Saturday my cousin Matt and buddy Paul hit some public East of Willmar. It was a nice mix of cover, but after 2 hours we put up just 5 hens.
Saturday afternoon the plan was to hit Paul’s 80 acres down by Montevideo. Armed with my lab, Matt’s Springer, and Paul’s 3 Springers, we headed out. A couple hundred yards later, we had one rooster and 2 more released (I never had a shot). Another 500 yards and we had 1 more in the bag. With a corn field being picked adjacent to his land, we decided to sit it out and wait until the last half hour of shooting time. That was the ticket. We had 5 roosters come flying right at the truck only to flare and drop in the grass right next to us. We turned the dogs loose and it was game on! Birds were flushing, we were shooting, reloading, and shooting some more. When the dust settled, 4 roosters hit the ground and the day was done.
On Sunday I hit a slough on the back of my Uncle’s land. It was a long walk through a muddy field to get back there, but it was all worth it. A ton of birds left early, but Jazzi found 2 that held tight and I dropped one of them. I also located a flock of a dozen Hungarian Partridges that kept flushing just out of range from me. The rest of the morning I sat in the combine with my cousin. We saw 12 birds in the 40 acre field we were in. They are about 90% done with harvest and should be done by the end of the week. From what I saw, I would say most of the corn in the Willmar area should be out in the next week.
I don’t like to pheasant hunt while deer season is open, but I’ll be out in a few weeks.
