Hunted north of GR this weekend. Actually way far of GR but wanted to give a point of reference in the general region without giving too much detail. Found birds. It wasnt easy and we pushed a lot of good looking cover that was void of birds which makes me wonder why I still love this sport! The key for me this weekend and the past few years for that matter is run and gun. Move as much ground as possible to find the good pockets. All magnificent looking cover doesnt hold life so like fishing you have to find the spot on the spot but unfortutally there are no electronics for this. Its all on foot. From Friday mid day through Sun morning two of us ended up with 9 birds. I consider that a very good number but still I feel that numbers are low. It took a LOT of work to get them and most were mature which to me is not a good sign. Also very rarely saw any birds on roads. I’ll be checking out extreme north Wi this weekend but already wish I was heading back to north central MN.

    Suzuki:

How far north you going to be??? Was thinking about trying to hook up with Bret Clark on Moose Lake on Sunday. Maybe grouse chasing north of the Turtle Flambeau Flowage on Sunday…

Sorry. Didnt see this in time. I would say the numbers this weekend were exactly like what I encountered near Ely. Not many birds. Lots of driving and hunting for a handful of birds. Beautiful country though. Took the wheelers and drove those a little bit. Plan to return to that area again next year.
PS-lots of canines up there. Saw 3 coyotes and lots of what looked like wolf tracks.
