Was thinking of taking my dad pheasant hunting in about a week and am unsure of where to go. We are from Winona, MN and were thinking of heading towards SD and hunting Talcot WMA (All public land, we dont know anyone) what is everyones thought on this place? It seemed like a decent area with over 5,000 acres and crops, wetlands and grassy pastures according to the DNR website. By the way we dont have a dog, really just want to get out Any help will be appreciated.

I have no idea where that area is. However, the closer you can get to Redfield, the better the hunting will be. Huron area is also awesome.

Use the SD public lands interactive map. It’s really helpful.

Sorry about that, I guess I forgot to mention that we will be staying within MN although I wish we could hunt the SD its just the old man wont drop the $$$ on out of state license. Anyways Talcot is just north of Worthington, MN off of interstate 90.

I’ve never hunted Talcot, but I know it’s huge. I’ve always hunted east of Worthington closer to Sherburn, but between the two there is tons of public stuff and with the new snow you might have any of them to yourself. This time of year weeds out the fair weather hunters.

If I were in your position I’d first pick up a copy of the All Outdoors Atlas by Sportsmans Connesction. Fleet Farm sells this book. The book will show all WMA’s and WPA’s. Using the book, pick out a milk run of areas to hit. I’d pick smaller areas where you and your dad can drive birds to pinch points and corners where the public land meets private fields. I think this would be your best option as your group is small and the birds will run until they have to get up.

    Also, get into the cattails

Oh, If you are looking for dinner after the hunt, you have to go to Bergen. Huge steaks for a very reasonable price.

Bergen is between Windom and I-90 on the east side if 71.

Thanks for the info. You are probably right in the fact that we should stay with the small wma’s and push the birds to pinch points and what not.

Also huge steaks for reasonable price..wont pass that up. Thanks again

top at the DNR office in Windom and they will set you up.There are lots of smaller cattail sloughs that will produce well right now. Also a second thumbs up on the Bergen Bar. Not only are the steaks big they are good as is all their food. It can get pretty busy on the week ends and they don’t take reservations.
