Jazzi and I had another great weekend of pheasant hunting. Originally I wanted to go to ND or Marshall, MN for the long weekend, but things fell through. On Saturday I was lucky enough to hunt with a couple guys who have land near Montevideo. Only 100 yards into our walk and 3 flushes later, it was apparent that these birds had seen very little pressure. It was actually a nice change of pace from the wild flushes I’m used to on public land. We had a few missed opportunities, but by noon we had our 6 in the bag. Birds in the bag are only a bonus the rest of the trip. In addition to my dog doing well, I got to watch some very good Springers do their work. They have all the energy of a pointer wound up into a 50 lb. springy hunting machine. The land we hunted was truely a pheasant and waterfowl sanctuary. It has a nice mix of grass, water, and food. On this day the birds were relating to the cattails so we all had wet feet by the end of the day.

On Sunday we went out for a couple hours near Willmar. My relatives farm every inch of their land, but every now and then I find a small slough or clump of grass that looks worth a walk. We drove through a muddy field, walked through another 200 yards of mud, and finally ended up at a half acre slough. The dogs rushed in and birds erupted. I think 5 roosters and atleast a dozen hens flushed. We bagged a couple and then made a 400 yard walk to a drainage ditch. After a long walk, a pair of roosters flushed and we dropped one. We decided to call it quits. By the time we reached the truck both of our dogs looked more like black labs and I think I grew 3-4″ with all the mud on my boots.

We had some tough walks this weekend, but the dogs got some good exercise and got to put up some birds. Even though my shooting is almost dead on this year, I still really go just to watch the dog work.

I guess my pics are too big again.

Fife, shoot me an email and I will post your pics!

Congrats on getting it done on Public Land. Never an easy thing to do.

Thanks Rob! Actually the birds were all harvested on private land, but my Uncle lets people hunt his land as long as they stop and ask. I’ve walked miles and miles of ditches without seeing anything, but every once in awhile I find a them. Sunday just so happened to be the day. There is still 1000 acres of corn to come out on their farms, so hopefully it only gets better.

Last weekend I hunted public land and bagged a couple birds, but it was much harder going. Just following a good dog goes a long way when chasing those seasoned birds.

Congrats Bigfife on a successful hunt! It sounds like the extra long walk through mud was certainly worth it!
