I talked to my dad yesterday. He had a group of hunters shoot 42 birds in one walk at his place. Sounds like it was pretty amazing. Over 500 flushed he figures. The beer was flowing early that afternoon. I can’t wait to get back there in a few weeks.

Thanks for the update, depressing to hear, but good to know what to expect.

I’ll be in the Miller area trying to throw some steel.

I just returned last night from 6 days in the Huron, Hitchcock, Miller area. I do not know the exact numbers for crop removal but, in talking with the local farmers, they all had the same story – They’re 2-3 weeks behind and the rain this past week hasn’t let them catch up.

We did see quite a few birds and had ok success but, everywhere you looked/went crops were unharvested. Some roads were impassible as it has rained a lot in the eastern section of our hunting area, west was a bit drier.

If anyone is planning to go within the next week or so, I would suggest you wait. Hunting is very tough right now and only about 5-10% of the crops are out over in NE South Dakota. Good luck if you do go. Our usual haunts are very tough right now with so many crops in.

Thanks for the update. We are planning on heading out just before thanksgiving but may not go if it doesn’t dry out.

If anyone is planning to hunt in the immediate Aberdeen area, you may want to rethink. The ground is so wet out there, most guys have written off their beans and will not start on the corn until there is a good hard freeze on the ground.

Not sure I would say to not head out there, we have gone the past two years when a lot of corn is in and have had decent hunting. We may not limit out every day, but last year and this year over over Halloween weekend we have had a day or two we have limited out. This year almost all crops were standing.

A buddy and I hunted public land in north central SD this past Thursday-Sunday. Hunted in the rain all day Thursday and ended up with 5 birds by the end of the day (should have had 6 but I fanned on an easy shot). Thursday was the wettest hunting I have ever hunted, but the moisture did not keep us out of many areas that we would usually hunt. Good boots would be recommended in some areas though. Friday was VERY windy and we only bagged two birds, but two cripples got away from us and a couple shots were missed as well. Saturday was perfect outside and we limited out by around 2:00. Saw a lot of birds Saturday. Sunday we bagged a couple more before heading home.

We had a great time out there….I would not hesitate to go out there just because the corn is up. You may have to work harder to find birds, but we were able to do it. We have been hunting the area a couple years now so we know some areas which helped. We did not see many hunters out there….pretty much no one on Thurs/Fri, a few more on the weekend. We did find birds in cover adjacent to corn, it may only be a couple birds but they add up after multiple locations.

I hope my post didn’t come across as “don’t go”. It’s just I’d rethink hunting the Aberdeen area or be prepared for harder than normal hunting. I’ve never seen the Jim river this high, this time of year. The creeks are flowing like April. It’s an odd year up there.

The corn is averaging about 35% moisture right now out there. That’s a long way from 14, needed to put in a bin. So, even if they farmers can access the fields, they will have to pay the price.

Sounds like the weather has been very nice the last couple days. My cousin is hoping to finish his beans tomorrow. He said realistically, they are 10 days of decent weather from starting the corn. Cross you fingers they can get a reprieve from the moisture.

The attached pics were taken just outside of Aberdeen near my cousin’s farm. She’s a bit soggy. “Nothing SINKS like a DEERE”

We hunted northwest of Brookings last weekend and it was real tough, this was our first time out there but we found some nice public land, only bagged 3 birds in 2 full days of hunting with 2 guys and 2 dogs,we flushed the most birds in the miserable snow rain combination on friday, saw plenty of birds before and after shooting hours heading to or from the corn. I think we would have done real well with less corn still up, wish I could get out there again in a month, how long does the gun deer season last out there?
