This weekend I had the chance to hunt with my brother and cousin. We had the opportunity to hunt my neighbor’s 170 acre peice of land in Renville County. He is without a dog this year, so I offered to help him control his pheasant population and he took me up on the offer. The property has a nice mix of native grass, cottonwood treelines, sloughs, cattails, and willows. On Saturday we started our walk around the perimiter to get the lay of the land. With the sun finally showing itself I was hoping to see the birds in the short grass, but that wasn’t the case. We finally located them on the edge of a large dried up pond that has a nice 20 yard strip of cattails. The birds were much heavier on the side nearest the corn field. We ended up with 4 before noon. After a break for lunch, we returned back to close out the day. Ten minutes into the walk, my cousin and I each popped a rooster and we were headed back to the truck.
On Sunday we returned to try get a few more birds before the football game. We walked and walked with little to show for it, but in the last 500 yards back to the truck we shot 4 nice roosters. The dogs were already tired from the day before and with the warmer weather they were spent.
In addition to the pheasant, this land had some very nice deer on it. On Saturday my brother found a shed with 5 points. I guessed the deer at about 140 inches if the other side matched. 100 yards later my cousin starts yelling like a little girl after the biggest buck in his 40 years of life almost ran him over. I never got to see it, but my cousin said it had 10-12 points and was most likely the same deer that we found the shed for. We didn’t run into anymore nice bucks but see saw a big bodied 6 pointer that we bumped twice and a half dozen nice size does.
I have pics, but I’m assuming the size is too big???
