My boy’s first grouse

Well we finally found some birds over MEA break. My son picked up his first and second birds this weekend. We were pretty disappointed with the 1/4″ of slush Thursday and the all day rain. We decided to do some exploring and found a couple new areas that looked promising (for pheasant)and got soaked. Friday we walked from 9am until dark and got two. They were the only 2 we saw! Of course my sons was an adult and mine was a juvenile, a point he didn’t miss!

Saturday we ran all the way up the North shore and met up with a buddy. We flushed 5 and each picked up one. Can someone please explain why people hike a footpath during hunting season and don’t wear bright colors???

All in all the numbers seem way down to me instead of up. I have been hearing a few distant flushes and not a lot of shooting either.

The nicest day of the weekend Sunday, he woke up with a sore throat and fever ending our trip. I wonder if the miles we put on and the rain did it? I was looking forward to trying out a couple new trails we learned of from a cafe owner. She made it sound like they were pretty thick in there! Oh well, maybe next weekend after his football tourney.

Great job Ferny on getting your son out hunting over MEA break and especially getting him his very first grouse!

    A hunt to remember!

He’s back in school today and already talking about hunting this weekend. We can’t wait to try out a couple new areas close to our favorites. We just have to get through his football tourney this Saturday and then Bang! I forgot to save the pic of him cleaning both of his birds he was grossed out and interested in all the guts at the same time. I only had to give him minimal help. They were tasty dinner Monday for the whole family.

    Thanks,

    Ferny.
