Trying to plan a trip to South Dakota in early November, looking at the Gazeteer, there sure are alot of wpa and gpa’s between Brookings and Desmet, anyone ever hunted this area? What kind of bird numbers? I dont mind a little less bird numbers if there are less hunters. Thanks for any advice and input.

Never hunted that area, but it seems to hold quite a few birds. Good Luck and let us know how you do when the time comes.
September 28, 2009 at 2:23 pm #60356There are good bird numbers in that area. You will also see a fair share of hunters. Have backup plans. Be ready to watch some ditches etc…
September 28, 2009 at 10:27 pm #60467Thanks for the input guys, I will report when we get back. Another question, how do you find the walk in areas? Maps available from DNR or for purchase.
Thanks again
JayOctober 1, 2009 at 12:18 am #60814Remember you can road hunt in SD too. However, but very clear on the rules!!!! It might be a way to experience something different than you are accustomed to in MN. It’s not “hunting”, but a different experience anyway. Maybe fill out a limit etc… Good luck and enjoy!!
October 3, 2009 at 1:48 am #61362I was looking around on the SD DNR web site and I cant find anything on the rules about transporting firearms, can you keep an unloaded gun uncased in your vehicle? What are the open intoxicant laws in SD?
October 3, 2009 at 4:51 am #61384Unloaded?? WTF. It’s SD. We load our guns. You can not have a round chambered. However, you can have rounds in the magzine. I’ll do some looking over the weekend. They have specific rules about how a vehicle can be “parked”/doors open etc….
As far as toxicants. Use your best judgement. Best if consumed at the place of sleep or while cleaning above road kills.
October 3, 2009 at 1:16 pm #61391Yeah I found the rules about doors and vehicle running, I also found a website listing fines for open intoxicant by state, I think I will stick to mountain dew while in the vehicle. Thanks for the help.
JayOctober 3, 2009 at 1:36 pm #61393not trying to hijack here sluggo, but I too am planning on heading out for the first time this year. I am going to wing it and head out there for the opener on the 17th. My wife has her girls getaway that weekend so I though that me and the boys and dogs would head out to my brothers in Sioux City and hopefully his wife and daughter will watch my 2 youngest boys while me and him and his son go chase some birds. Any suggestions at all as to where to go in the SE corner of the state? I am sure there will be tons of hunters and I don’t want to step on any toes but yet I still want to get the dogs some action, and maybe get a few spots lined up for a hunt later in the year. I have already requested the hunting atlas’s from the link provided, any idea how long before it gets to NE Iowa? Also if anybody could point me to a reputable place to hunt for a fee, that would not be out of the question. Pretty simple, no guides, no dogs or no lodging needed, just a place to hunt–that would be reasonably priced.
Thanks,
JeffOctober 3, 2009 at 4:22 pm #61406I sent for the atlas a week ago and it still hasnt arrived yet if that helps.
October 5, 2009 at 2:25 am #61498You can pick one up at just about any gas station out there this time of year also. Although i’m sure it will show before your trip. Good luck boys!!
Sorry, never hunted south of Sioux Falls. I suspect it’s pretty good down that way also. Just given the number of game farms in that area.
October 6, 2009 at 3:09 pm #61938I requested an atlas online and waited a month with no results. I called a regional game and fish office and made a second request and got 2 pheasant packets 2 days later. easy and quick
October 7, 2009 at 7:41 pm #62286There is a list of regional offices on the SD fish & wildlife home page with phone no and addresses. Just pick the one closest to where your going to hunt. Good luck!
