Getting ready for my yearly Dakota trip. This year we’re going to Watertown for the first time. Is anyone out there familiar with the area and willing to share any comments, tips, advice, hints, info on lodging, phone numbers e.t.c Thanks!

My sister lives in watertown and have hunted it several times…In my opinin, if you are making the trip, head west a bit more to the Clark, Redfield, or Miller area…we have always seen many more birds a little further west. We also mainly hunt ditches and public land in and around those towns mentioned along with some prive we got.. Miller has a donation only campground in the city with water and electic we always stay at. If you are stuck on Watertown you will get birds but nothing like a little further west..just too many people hunting in my opinion…good luck and pm me if you want info about places to stay in Watertown…Ill ask sis whats around…good luck…jay

Thanks for the response. It looks like we’ll be staying at a rental house in Florance 17 miles NW of Watertown. We are hunting mid week so I’m hoping the pressure will be less but we are still hoping to find a private spot for one day Anyway Thanks again.

Staying in Florence will put you real close to some good action. Just plan to drive west about 30 – 45 minutes each day, 60 is better(puts you north of Redfield). The further west you go, the more birds you’ll see.

Close to there, some decent hunting, but not SD normal if you ask me. It’s like MN. They farm everything and burn the rest to farm more. I’m not telling the farmers what to do, just stating the fact. No cover = no birds.
