With the season winding to a close I started thinking about improving my shooting skill. I am looking to up my kill from 98% to 99%. Anyone use a bird sight on their shoutgun? How would you rate the performance?

Don, If your shooting 98% I don’t think you need to worry about your sights. In my book that’s pretty good shootin!

Something along this line that attaches to the vent rib.

I’d like to see them on a gun in person, what do they cost?

I have seen some magnetic ones for around 12.00 but heard they do not stay on very well. The one pictured goes for around 20.00.

Other than a mental confidence factor, I don’t believe these make any appreciable difference(except a possible negative effect). Focus needs to be on the target, not the barrel.

My uncle was given one of those magnetic sights and thought it was the cats meow. One day he was really hot on the ducks……could not miss. He was bragging on how that sight made a difference………until I pointed out that his gun did not have one…..as it turns out, it was still in his gun case. Proper mounting and form override any gimmick…….

Personally, for positive effects, I think the 20 dollars would be better spent on ammo and some clays.

Don, I use one (have for about 4 years now) and would not hunt with out one now. I actually did hunt with out one as for the last 2 months the Wife lost mine back in October. I bought one before I went out on Sunday and wow what a difference. It really focuses your eyes attention to the bead. Never again hunt with out one. My shooting is definitely better with it on.

    I highly suggest getting one!

I do not hunt with one, but my buddy does. He really likes it, particularly while duck hunting in the early morning. He did have a problem with his first one. I guess some how he bent the fiber do hicky and his shots were WAY off. At least that is what he claims. He gets kinda pevish when I out shoot him from the boat.

Rob – I went back and re-read your hunting report. It seems that you took about a dozen shots to get your three birds……..What was your shooting like BEFORE you bought that fancy sight?????

    Just funnin’ with ya

Lip, do use the magnetic ones? If so do they stay on well?

I would stay away from the magnetic ones. I’ve got several friends who have lost them in duck blinds, shelter belts etc… They can get knocked off easier than one would think.

Yes I know Timmy, but I have not shot since October, A lil Rusty.

I probably hit bird with at least 8 of the 12 shells though. I was dropping feathers with almost every shot.

Definitely, not my best shooting day, but your bound to have those from time to time, especially when you do not use the gun all year long.

Don, I had a magnetic one for 4 years. The wife lost it in SD this past October. I replaced it wth a cheaper magnetic one just ot have one. I do not like it as much. This magetic one has a plastic cradle. My old one had a metal bracket/cradle. Up to my wife losing my last one I never had an issue and I busted a lot of brush. The only thing I suggest is making sure the bracket/cradle is metal rather then plastic.

Not the best picture but here is a pic close to what you see.

I had tried one like that on an 11-87. I felt it made me shoot better as I could see the site better in low light. The only problem with that one was it was magnetic and it fell off easily. Who knows where it is now.

Took the one off my SBE replaced with a after market one. It fell off and haven’t use a sight for 6 years. Find the bird and move the barrel to it. Patterning your gun is the most important part of killing.

When I’m shooting my best, I only see a hazy outline of my barrel on my autos (or barrels-SxS &OU). My focus is on the bird.

That said, I’m not always in the “zone” and then I gravitate to my old Rem 11 which has its bead mounted on a pedastol for lack of a better word. That big bead-blob seems to help, and that’s probably what people like so much about the glow sights.
