Well I’m on call this holiday so I couldn’t go home to see the family so I did the next best thing……….Rooster chasing It started out cold and I botched my first opportunity, I couldn’t get my pull over mitten off but after that things started to come together. I found the birds on the edges not in the middle of the cattail slew’s unless you pushed them out there. I think the walking is just as hard for the birds in the deep snow as it is on us, they seemed to be hanging out in brushy cover. The name of the game is long shots, the birds are busting wild and none of then were any closer than 40 yards. If you have a good dog and the snow for tracking you will get your birds, just knock them down and the dog will do the rest. The days of close in points are long over I shot one nice long spur and also the smallest December rooster I’ve ever seen. Look at the bird on the right in the first picture, it’s small but I didn’t realize how small until I got it home to clean, it had no spurs at all and very small, it must have hatched in late August. You can see the difference in the normal cleaned bird at the top and the baby below it. well I’m going to my neighbors for a ham dinner, I hope you all had a great Christmas, I sure did

Congrats on picking off some late season birds. I made it out for a few hours also. I saw a lot of hens and failed to connect on the lone rooster. It was a great day to be out though and it sure beats sitting around eating all day.
