I finally had a chance to check out the public hunting south of Roch. that I,ve been looking at.My companions were my 9 yr old grandson on his first walk along and my 6 yr old lab Maggie. Not 5 minutes from the parking lot a big rooster blasted out from under Scotts feet and came on a kamikasi run right in front of me.I had time to notice Scott stumble back and his eyes get big as plates before I dropped the bird with an easy shot. After that Maggie went on a tear and flushed a rooster about 60 yrds out.I don,t shoot at wild flushes so I called the dog back and we all had a talk about staying calm and working as a team. once Maggie settled down we headed for a tree line with a old food plot next to it. 10 minutes into the food plot, just as Scott was getting bored and chattering about gophers and snake holes, Maggie got birdy and put up a hen after a short chase. we finished up the corn and flushed another rooster at the edge that I managed to get on the 2nd shot. Total time out from truck back to truck was around 1 and1/2 hrs. I saw 4 birds, got 2 and created a new pheasant fanatic. The cover in the wma was great with lots of transitions and edges. there were un picked corn fields all around the area so it should get better in a few weeks. I definately will be going back.

Congrats on your hunt yellowdog and great job getting your grandson out! I bet he can’t wait to carry a gun now!

Thanks Brad. Scott is definately wanting to shoot. I’ve been thinking about letting him carry his .410 [empty of course] next time but it may just frustrate him more.
