Well now that my favorite grouse spot seems to be out of the bag, may as well do a report on my trip up this weekend.

Got up to Rock marsh by 6:30 saturday morning. Walking out to the spot right after legal shooting time, my buddy flushed 2 to his right. too bad i was on his left because as one will discover from this I need to get my buddy out to the range!

Trees were not only holding 95% of there leaves still, but it also seems that they are almost all green still. So that made this dog less hunt even that much more challenging.

The 1st half hour we did not see a bird of any sort. Then it seemed to be magic hour. I could barely see the orange of mybuddy through the leaves, and I hear BANG BANG!… then I hear him call “4 Birds come on over I know where they flushed too.” to which I responded “4 birds 2 shots. You got one right?” “No I went high then low.!” Well these birds hit the ground running never to be found again. Well about 15 minutes later he stumbles onto 3 more birds. BANG BANG BANG! “Please tell me you got one!” a say. Nope missed them let’s go get them. NOTHING! 20 minutes later. I hear one flush from my right once again towards my buddy. BIRD YOUR.. BANG BANG… @#$% IT!!!!! needless to say I didn’t even have to ask By this time we had company in the woods, and about every 15 minutes for a good 2 hours you would hear someone taking a shot. Not sure how they were doing, but I knew how we were doing. 8 birds flushed none in the bag.

After a quick lunch break around 10 we headed back in we found a new spot, which did nothing but toss more frustration into the day for me. I was walking along the south side of a fallen 30′ pine, when I hear 2 birds flush to my buddy on the north. ( got to give the birds credit they know which is the safe way to fly.) BANG! you guessed it another miss. about 10 minutes later He jumps a woodcock, BANG BANG … BANG!…. My buddy just looks at me, and says Hey I still had one more shot left. Yeah well I figured I would save you the shell, and I can only watch you miss so much. his 2 shot, Nothing but alot of leaves. My one shot for the day, and I bag a bird! all in all good day, in the fact that We were in the woods, so it couldn’t have been a bad day. Total number of birds in the bag, well good thing I’m not basing my day on that.

Nice shooting! Sounds like you guys had some decent action.

I didn’t bat 1000, but I got a couple grouse and a woodcock over here in WI. Most fun was watching the light turn on in my young Drahthaar. He had some soilid points ad retrieves.

    :

Oh come on now Ron Lip can’t be THAT bad. (Can he?)
I mean I think Lip could have hit this woodcock. It jumped up about 10′ in front of us.

Last year I was on a roll. I had a stint where I went 9 birds with 10 shells. However, I started the year out like 5 birds with about 12 shells.

Guess it’s a good thing with it being a new year and all we all start out back at 0-0. Unless you are my buddie then after day one you are 0-50… or something like that.

I know that GM has some good gunsmiths on hand. It sounds like your friend has a bent barrel Great report.

YEAH that’s it a bent barrel.. I’m not sure if it’s good our not that his Franchii Semi is actually @ Gander getting work done right now. SO maybe it was having to lug the 870 wingmaster and having to pump that threw him off?

Always a good time in the woods. Just being out there is 50% of the reason I go. Birds just happen to be the bonus.

It is Illegal to shoot woodcock with a weapon that holds more than 3 shells.

Oh no he let 2 go and missed, so I took the 3rd shot. I couldn’t stand to watch him miss anymore.

Great report sir! I gotta get out and do some grousing.

As far as the other topic about Lip’s ability to shoot: The only time I saw him shoot last year he couldn’t miss. He got his 2 birds with 2 shots. And I think I got my 2 birds with about 5 shots (which is good for me)
