On Saturday I took my dog out for a quick run at a WMA by my house. I was hoping to get some energy out of him so I could do some house work for Christmas. Well I got a lot more then that.

The parking lot was full of trucks by the time we got there. I thought oh well at lest I can let him run a get some energy out of him. I saw a big group of guys working to the east so we went west. As we came to a small group of cattails my dog Jackson locked up on point. I steped in to the cattails and out came a hen. We them walked down the edge for about another 20 yards and Jackson locks up on point again. I hear a brid moving and Jackson moved to block the birds exit plans. I step in and a rooster comes up Bang and the bird goes down . I send jackson to get it but the bird was gone. After about 10 minn of looking I see Jackson (well hafe of him) busting in to a snow covered mound of weeds. Then out he comes with the bird in his mouth . I would have never found that bird if it was not for him. We then started back along the cattail edge again and a few minn later he locks up on point again. Up comes another rooster. Bang and another bird is in the game bag and we are heading back to the car.

We were only out for about a 1/2 hour. Well so much for getting some engery out of him. All day long after we got back to the house all he want to do was to get me to go back out there.

On Christmas eve my FW cooked the two birds up for dinner and yes Jackson did get a few little bites of his birds. If it was not for him we would not have had them for dinner.

Sorry but I do not have any pictures. I forgot to bring the camera. I did not think we would have any birds to take pictures of.

Sounds like you’ve got a good dog with a good nose. I don’t know how many I would have lost in thick cover if it wasen’t for Zach and Sara finding what they did.

Thats great for this time of year. Sounds like Jackson is doing good. Also sounds like your getting your shooting eyes back .

Yes the shooting eye is back now. Those were the frist two wild birds of the year. He has put up a lot of birds this year but most have been just out of range, some I have let my son try to shoot. But most of them have been missed do to a bent barrel It was fun to watch him find the downed bird. When we got to the clump of weeds where the bird was. There was no question the bird was there. He busted threw the snow and weeds like it was the only bird in the world and he wanted it.

That is why you got the birds. I alwas “forget’ my camera at home when I want a good outing.

Sound like you have a great pup but when that energy leaves you will miss it.

The same things happens when I’m fishing too. I hope my dogs energy does not leave any time soon. He is too much fun. Even when he gets in to things he should not be getting in to. You got to love the dogs.
