I have a customer that has been after me to go pheasant hunting so I called him up and made plans for Saturday. I’m not sure if he knew what he was getting himself into, I think he was used to the early season layed back hunting, shuffling threw nice grassy fields and young dumb birds flushing in easy gun range. After a half an hour of tromping threw snow drifts he realized late season means hard work We hunted our first spot only to have the farmers young German shepard try to hump Lindy the whole way , needless to say we moved on to spot number two. It was a great day to be outside, it wasn’t nearly as cold as last weekend and there was no wind blowing at all. We found a nice south faceing ditch with good thick weeds on the north side that were holding alot of birds, I think they were just sunning themselves down in that ditch. The nice thing was that we didn’t get them all up at once, just one hear and one there. We had some great dog work, alot of nice points on hens and roosters. At one point Lindy locks up and I get down in the ditch, I kick the rooster up and Bruce knocks it down, Lindy runs up and grabs the bird and starts bringing it back only to bump another rooster on the way back. All in all we had a great day, we missed a few only to have them sit back down further down the ditch and flush them a second time later. The morel of the story, there are plenty of birds out there yet and with only a few weeks left in the season its crunch time. I am going to hunt in Iowa over Christmas, I hope to get at least two more Minnesota trips in before its all over. See you at the rooster run
