My dad and I hunted from Nov. 16-21 west of Aberdeen, South Dakota and had great hunting on public land. The first day was a little slow as we hunted our way out to where we were staying but starting Sunday we had great hunting. We shot 20 birds between Sunday and Wednesday morning. We were hunting CRP walk in areas near picked corn fields and it seemed the birds moved in and out of the grass to the corn all day long.

The dog work was great as well. My 4 year old chocolate is a hunting machine. He really did a nice job on running birds, not to mention he throws in a few points a day if the birds are holding really tight.

All and all it was a great hunt. If I get a chance I will write a recap of the hunt with some pics attached.

I was out by litchfeild last Friday. I only saw two hens . Man has that area been pounded hard. Very WPA I stoped at had well woren paths in them. The birds were very spooky.

Seeing roosters everyday out. The problem being, I am hunting real heavy cover. Not getting many shots.

I was out with my dad and the dog this weekend chasing some grouse. Only flushed 6 birds, but we would have walked right by all of them without the dog (she’s still new, but getting the hang of it)…man they were holding tight. Only came home with one, as they were in the thick stuff, but fun none the less. Wont be back chasing roosters til late Dec. out in ND.

I was out near Marshall Last weekend. Not much to report from me. Kicked up about 30+ birds, only 3 were rosters. We got all 3. Too bad there were 6 of us though. However Just at sun set about 10 minutes after we got back to the trucks, we saw about 15 Roosters fly in to the field we had just finished working. Heading back out next weekend though.

I spent Friday, Saturday, and Sunday out chasing birds near Willmar. Met up with zoomer on Friday to hit a couple public lands and he ended up getting 1 rooster. It was the only bird we had a shot at and I think we only say a half dozen more. Saturday I walked some private ditches and scared up 2 cats in 3 miles. I guess picked clean fields mean no food and no pheasants. Saturday afternoon I hit a WPA and the dog flushed a bunch of hens and one seasoned rooster who escaped all three of my shots. Sunday I went back to the same WPA and went 1 for 1 on roosters. He was hiding out on a island that I tip toed out to on the two inches of ice. The birds are getting smart around there, so bring on the snow and ice.

I will be out every weekend up to closing, I am going to go to Iowa a few times as well. Bring on the snow and cold, I like to hunt alone or with only one other person for the simple fact that its easier to get on private land if you don’t pull up with a pile of guys and trucks, especially if you haven’t developed a good relationship yet.I can’t believe its almost Christmas, good luck this weekend guys.

I’ve been taking the dog to the office lately. Seems she like to exercise over lunch. We’ve shot one here and there and now need to make room for next week. Looks like a pheasant dinner is in the future.

I’ll be at the game farm this weekend chasing the stupid late season birds. I wouldn’t have scheduled a game farm hunt during the season, but some friends set it up and needed some more people. It will be a good time and I bet the dog won’t mind the easier birds. May the shooting gods look down upon me this weekend.
