There are a good number of birds, at least I am seeing birds each day. Not very many hunters out either, I guess everyone is gearing up for the upcoming deer season.
Today was the best so far this year for seeing a number of roosters. “Kota” flushed the first one out of a wooded area and we did not have a good shot. We marked where the bird landed in some swicth grass. About 20 minutes later, “Kota” flushed the bird again. This time I had a great shot on the bird flying straight away. Two shots and the bird kept flying, with only a couple of feathers floating to the ground . Nuts! the bird didn’t look like it was crippled. Continued hunting. About 45 minutes and a 1/2 mile later, I lose contact with the dog. Blow the recall whistle and wait. No sign of him, hmmm whats up. About 5 minutes later “Kota appears through the switch grass with a wounded bird! The bird I put a few bb’s in that I thought was a flyaway. This was in real heavy cover and woods so needless to say I was real pleased with his ability to find the bird. About 5 minutes later “Kota flushes another rooster and John gets a clean shot on it. “Kota retrieves to me and as I am putting the bird in my vest, he flushes two more roosters.
Exciting day, some good shooting and the dog is doing great! Man what a blast I am having this year with him.
