Well, I have been out a number of times to Redwing, Finlayson, Askov, Rutledge, Minong & Frog Creek Wi and have yet to think this is a up peak year as reported by the department of negative resources.

I still have a couple places around Chislom & Hermantown yet to hit, but if things don’t change I am calling this year a little closer to poor than average year.

I am probably averaging contact on 5 birds per a 1/2 day. I figure most of the time I am around a flush every hour or so. Of those I may get a chance at a good point on 1/2 of the birds from the dogs.

I found it helps a lot to get away from the four wheeler trails and places where the road hunters which seem to be more of than ever before.

    Anyone else having better luck?

Central WI…seeing more grouse than any recent year…flushed 7 on our way to the deer stand Sat. afternoon youth hunt! Have seen quite a few on the gravel backroads too… A couple more days and the leaves will be down and then it’s time to hunt grouse!

How was the population in Finalayson?

We used to deer hunt there for years, and would always spend some time during the fall grouse hunting. We really didn’t have much luck except for a few here and there. Just curious.

I spent Sept. 17 thru Oct. 1 at our cabin north of Two Harbors and spent part of every afternoon late chasing grouse. Only two birds to show for it and only four or five other flushes. I was dog-less and the folage was a bit much, but you’d expect to at least hear more flushes if birds were around. Even when it was raining early in the day and fishing had to wait I could walk good areas from the past and not see birds on roost or hunkered down on logs under shelter.

I think Minnesota’s grouse numbers are still below any peak as you suggest.

Over by Finlayson was not too bad. We were west of town on state land and probably pushed 1/2 dozen birds in 4 – 5 hours of walking. There was no real rhyme or reason to where the birds were but there were a few around.

A few weeks ago they had the little white berries in their crop; two weeks ago it was the really big red berries. Last weekend at Frog Creek it was clover down by the river beds.

We did find some woodcock moving, not like it used to be when I was a little kid, but this has been a pretty good year for woodcock compared to the last few.

People are telling me the numbers are good by Menominee and Stanley. I may head that direction next weekend rather than Chislom.

Has anyone been around the Menominee area ?
