Birds not There

Grouse hunted NE of Winni all weekend. In my opinion the birds are down from last year in that area. Not even enough excitement to warrant a return trip for me.

I was alittle south of Grand Rapids last weekend and only got up 3 grouse, very poor. Nicer weather may have made a differance.

Hunted around Effie on saturday and jumped one bird. Very slow. Lots of guys on wheelers pounding the trails.

My buddy and I figured it was a regional thing. Either that or DNR skews the data because there’s no way that area increased from last year. We flushed more birds quicker closer to McGregor on the way home but only got to hunt about an hour before the storms turned on heavy. My gut says that area was better than further north. I wish I had time to go everywhere in the state but too many other things going on as I get older.

There has been very little shooting in the AM’s and PM’s while I am bowhunting. Normally we here a lot of grouse hunters, I think I heard 3 shots this weekend. We have seen a few grouse but nothing like other years. May be early yet.
