THIS IS FROM LAST YEARS TRIP TO ROYAL FLUSH IN 2007

This past weekend a few fellow IDA’ers had the privledge to get out on a late season Rooster preserve hunt. This “Get Together” was known as the 13th Annual Rooster Run coordinated by IDA Staffer Corey Waller.

I just wanted to say THANKS and that I had an absolute blast.

Man did we have a fun group! It was nice hunting with you again Joel(drewsdad) and Ron (Sliderfishin). Great first time hunting with the infamous BK (Brian K) and Tuck (Chris Tuckner). I think we need to get the boys’ together a few more times next year. A pleasure as always to watch such great dog work and such great dogs working together. The weather might have been on the cold side, but the hunt and dogs were hot.

A big thanks to Corey & Jen Waller for setting this up and another HUGE thanks to ROYAL FLUSH SHOOTING PRESERVE. Man they have quite the facility and thanks to Royal Flush for the personal tour of their state of the art Royalty British Kennels. A top notch place if you are looking for a British Lab, be sure to look them up. Great fields and food also.

Corey, you can count Rufus and I in for the 14th Annual Rooster Run in 2008!

Looks like you guys had a good time. I wish I would have read the post for this event instead of passing right over it numerous time. This would have been perfect for my dog. Count me in next year.

Ron, I think Star is going to get a complex with all that publicity.

Don’t worry Fife you didn’t miss much.

You missed it all. Man it was action packed!!!!! Unless, you call great dog work and Roosters flying everywhere not much.

I’m thinking it should not have been out of the question for somebody (like family) to give a big hunting guy a personal invite to something like this
Ironically, I ran into a man and woman decked-out in “Royal Flush” clothing, on Thursday at the Sam’s Club in Eagan.
I hope you guys didn’t take care of their entire $500 shopping trip while you were there
    cheers

    Hey Drake!
Tuck asked me why I didn’t invite you. I told him I didn’t need wounded grizzly mad at me. And you don’t seem to be hurting for outdoor adventure. And we both agreed you only like hunting “wet” birds anyway. Join us next year!

This would have been perfect for your dog Dan

Tuck thanks for giving me the best laugh I had in a long time BUT next time shoot both wings, PLEASE.

Tuck and I are hunting on side of the field when Star goes on point BUT I can see the bird is running and out in front of the dog. I call Star off point and get him up to where the bird is, well it doesn’t take long before he sees the bird and is off to the races. Pheasant now has a split second decision, get grabbed by the dog or flush. He choose to flush, with the angle I had I never had a shot. So Tuck takes a shot and wings the rooster. Now we got a race.
    Dog vs. Pheasant
    Speed = Dog
    Cornering ability = Rooster
Dog wins after 30-45 seconds. Now Star has the bird he walks over to me and I get a hand on the rooster just not a real good handle.
Bird slips out of my hand and looky here another foot race Star gets the bird again and walks it over BUT before he drops the bird into my hand, I get the look. Every person that has owned a birddog knows the look, it basically says Look I have done my job as a dog NOW it is your turn to do yours

Thanks again Corey, Brian, Joel, Tuck, Rob, Daisy, Rufus and last but not least John from Royal Flush.

I told Slider I took the right wing, and left the other for him.

God, the pounce was great by the truck! That was worth the price of admission right there. If you have ever seen video of a fox or yote pouncing on a mouse, that is what it was like.

Lip, did you give Rufus a rub down Sunday night after he thawed?

Actually after he rested in the truck @ Lunch he was good to go again. He stayed out of the deep stuff for the most part so he wa snot dragging “his boys” on the snow in the afternoon. No issues when he got home.

The pounce, man I love it when he does that. It is even funnier when the bird has moved, like it did that day. He comes up looking like it flew and then finds out that it hasn’t. He then gets that look of “where in the H – E – double hockey sticks is it” I’ve seen him do that and he starts swatting it like a cat and starts pawing at the bird trying to get it up.

Slider, “THE LOOK”???? Nope don’t know what your talking about.

Is it the same look you get when he locks up on a beautiful point, lets you walk up to him, flush the bird and you empty your gun on the bird, never touch it and he comes back staring you down.

Nope don’t know what you are talking about. Been there more than a few times.

Thanks again guys. Just what I needed after that cold snap to cure the cabin fever until we are able to hit open water again.

Hey guys! I got Daisy retrieving the frozen pheasant today! Thanks for the idea Slider! That “dummy” isn’t gonna last a long time. Its already lost its head and feet. But she’s picking it up and bringing it to me and I am thrilled!
