Now for the Blasting part of the Cast & Blast weekend.
Saturday found Scott and I on LEG 3 of the Cast & Blast weekend. Scott is a College buddy of mine who moved away after we graduated from NDSU 9 years ago. We get together a few times a year to fish and or hunt. He comes to ND or MN every Fall and I go down to Florida chasing those saltwater species a few times a year. Due to the rigid schedule and the prior nights Halloween Festivities, we found our way down to the Honey Hole a little later that I was hoping for. This leg of the weekend Scott and I were joined by Stacie and Ron (aka Sliderfishin from IDA). Along with 2 great dogs in Rufus the Flusher and Star the Pointer.
We found the birds to be a little sketchy and not flying or holding very well right off the bat. With a very stiff NW wind these birds were a little weary of flying. With a few birdy Dogs and no flushes we were shaking our heads and double guessing what was going on, as we had birds flushing out the back side of us. With a very big buck on this property and not wanting to enter his core area and get to close to my stands, this kept us from hunting a few key areas and probable of holding a ton of birds with that wind.
We had a big lull in the middle of the afternoon, like it seemed like someone else already hit the spots we were hunting. However, once the sun started to get low in the sky we started to see a ton more birds. Still not quite the high numbers of birds I was used to seeing, but a good number. Come days end we downed 5 Roosters, found 4, saw 2 does and 1 buck. It was a great short day in all, but sharing it with my Stacie and Ron made it that much better. Watching a Rufus and Star was a treat as always. But to be able to chase Roosters, Eyes, and have a few with Scott the former ND boy turned Floridian is what I miss the most. It was great sharing what we used to do day in day out Scott. I’m already looking forward to next year and definitely looking forward to wrestling with a few of those Salt Water fish come Winter We will have to se if we can get on a Goose / Deer weekend next year Scott. Tell that twin brother of yours he missed out on a doozy.
Well, I’m switching gears and the next month I will be focused on chasing monster bucks with bow and gun. Looking forward to sharing some time in the woods with my family especially my Dad as we have a few weekends we will be sitting in he woods. I have not hunted as much as I wanted to this Fall, but hopefully I can make up for it here in the next month. Good Luck this weekend to all you gun hunters and I hope everyone has a fun but safe opening weekend. Until next time, Lip is out!
