Well, the first day of pheasant camp at my parents place is done. They live on Okobojo bay 25 miles north of Pierre. I woke up to 6 mule deer in their yard (around 80 yards away). There were 5 does and a monster buck. The buck was an 8 point and I am guessing him at 25 wide and 30 tall. It was a real gem. Later that morning on our way to our hunting spot we saw 2 groups of Antelope. The second ground had eighteen does (Jennies, not sure the real term) and one buck. The buck was a once in a lifetime Antelope. I guess him a around 20″. It was an amazing looking animal and an amazing start to a goor pheasant hunt.

So, now for the pheasants. There were 4 of us hunting today and the same 4 will be hunting tomorrow. Come Saturday, some of our old friends will be meeting up for a hunt and we will have a party of 15. A friend of ours has the nickname of Deputy Dan and he used to own a hunting and fishing guide service. He took us out today on some of his land near Agar. The first field we walked I was able to shoot 7 roosters in 3 minutes. At the same time we pushed an 8 pointer and 3 jackrabbts out. It was the most picturesque hunt you could image. These are all wild birds with half to three quarter inch spurs and none of them had blinders on (game farm birds). If anyone has every wanted to pheasant hunt on some of the best South Dakota pheasant land let me know and PM me. I usually try to take 2 to 3 people with me to stay with me at my parents place. The only thing it will cost you is a license and maybe a slight hangover. It is an amazing time. Redneck and Redneck JR hunted with my dad last weekend. Here are some pics of todays hunt. I will keep you posted with the next couple days hunt.

Wow sounds like a great time, If you got room another time, I’d love to experince some south Dakota birds. The MN bird seem to be a bit elusive for me I also have no adversions to hangovers

    Justin,
Sounds like you guys had a great hunt. Your folks have a beautiful place and an even better view there on Oahe. To anyone that is interested this is one heck of an opportunity. There may be nicer folks on the face of the Earth than these folks but I haven’t found them yet. They didn’t know us from Adam and in 5 minutes we felt like old friends. The little bar at Okobojo Resort is a hoot to. I wish we had taken some pictures there but we wanted to get thte birds cleaned and get to the bar.
We will be out that way for West River deer so we are hoping to stop by and see your folks Justin and show them the big Buck Chris popped. Enjoy the rest of your hunt and tell your folks Hi from the Rednecks. Tell them Lady wants to come visit again.

Great pics. I remember DD from my time in Pierre, we often ran into each other on the water or out hunting. I still think Pierre is the best place I’ve ever lived if you like to chase deer, pheasants, ducks, geese, walleyes, smallies and salmon. My problem was making a living good enough to support all the addictions.

Thanks for sharing!! I love hearing about that area.

Day two was just as good as day one, with the exception of seeing more birds than yesterday. We flushed around 700 to 800 pheasant, but they were hard to get under today. It was blowing around 30 mph today and the birds are getting more and more wild every time you push them up. I have pics of todays hunt but they didn’t turn out very well. Tomorrow is when we will get the group of 13 to 15 friends. I am hoping for some good pictures tomorrow. I will keep you posted.

Day 3 was definitely a blast. We are packing up now and getting ready to head back to Wisconsin. I will post more pics and stories tomorrow. I have to save something to do at work on a Monday morning.

A few of our hunters backed out on Saturday, so we only ended up with 11 hunters. We got our birds but it was a tougher hunt. The wind was blowing in the 30’s again and that made the birds pretty flightly (that and being shot at for the last week or so). We flushed hundreds and hundreds of birds again, but they were getting up a long ways out from us. I ended up using 3″ mags and a majority of the birds shot were in excess of 60 yards. We defintely blew up some shells to get them. I have a nice bruiser on the shoulder to remind me of it.

Here is one more pic from the hunt. My brother-in-law wanted to get a jack pelt for his wall, so we let him blast away at one of these blasted critters. SD is starting to get quite a population of “Jacks” again. That and those pesky prairie dogs that are taking over their country-side. They sure are fun to shoot though.

Wow, looks like you had a great hunt! I was out around Dell Rapids last weekend hunting on some friend’s land…not a lot of birds and we really had to work for them. We’re heading out around Pierre this weekend…taking my 1 year old lab who is just getting introduced to what pheasant hunting is all about. She did pretty well last weekend. Any chance your dad might want a couple hunting partners this weekend? We’re planning on hunting mostly public land, but that sure does get a lot of pressure early in the season.
