About half of the corn is down in the area, and the rest is disappearing fast. Today was mostly scouting, but we did get out and flush some birds too. Most of the roosters flushed well out of range, but the hens held nice and tight for some excitement. In the morning we saw a lot of birds going between the corn and short grasses on the hillsides. Throughout the day more and more birds seemed to be moving into the cattails. In the last half hour of daylight, my dog flushed atleast 20 hens from a couple cattail sloughs. The water is pretty low also, so most of these areas are just muddy. I will be here until Friday, so hopefully I will have some birds to report in the next few days.

October 26, 2006 at 12:56 am #23223No huns this year. Last year I saw 5 flocks of 8-12.
Like Lewis and Clark, we loaded our gear and headed West today. Our first spot was a giant WMA 2 miles from the South Dakota border. Hunting with me was my brother, friend from school, and former boss. The birds were jumping all over on the cattail edges. We began flushing birds immediately. It was the first time out for two of the guys, so they had a hard time identifing the birds. After they passed on 3 roosters, they got their eyes adjusted and on track. We folded one bird that dumped in the cattails. Three dogs, three guys, and no bird. 100 yds later and the same crap over again. 2 lost birds…FRUSTRATING. We finished our walk with a couple more misses. Spot number two was a small corn foodplot adjacent to some river bottoms. 10 yards off the road, my brother dropped and birds and so did I. I ran to the bird only to find a creek in the way. Luckily my dog marked the bird and made the retrieve. The afternoon hunt produced another bird I knocked down, only to watch run away through a cut bean field. Ended the day with 2 in the bag and 3 lost birds. Today was a rollercoaster. First down after losing two birds to the biggest high ever of watching my dog retrieve her first live bird ever. Then back down after 3 dogs lost a bird I put down in an open field.
The birds are out there, and I will be back with better dogs next time.

October 26, 2006 at 11:59 pm #233222 roosters shot, and 2 in the bag today. We did a little too much last night, so I had to fly solo today. I hunted more public land in Lincoln Co. again today. All new ground, but still a ton of birds. I connected on two shots today and found both. I’m taking a few days off to build a garage, and then back to it.
