I just walked in the door from 4 days of chasing roosters. On Saturday, our group of 18 hunted over 600 acres of private Swift County pheasant haven. We decided to hunt some management land first, and then save the farm for later. Well, at 9:30am we were all back at the farm because every public within 20 miles was packed. We hunted the afternoon, and ended up with 22 birds. Sunday was a little more laid back, but our smaller group of 6 ended up limiting out. On Monday, we decided to hit some management lands from Willmar to Benson. We walked, trudged, and crawled through over 5 miles of pheasant country. 4 hens flushed and 1 long range rooster. It was obvious that each land we hunted had been hit hard. In the afternoon, my cousin called from the combine and told us to get our butts down to their farm. Upon arrival, we found 12 rows of corn still standing. My brother and I pushed it, flushing 10 hens, three roosters, and a few deer. It is amazing how tight the birds will hold around a combine. Today, the plan was to drive around and look for birds because the dog was too tired. At 10am we called the mission off and decided to go pound some walleyes instead. It was a good choice. Again a great opener. Great dog work and fun times with friends. Most of the corn is still standing in Kandiyohi, Chippewa, and Swift counties. I think I will let the farmers go crazy for a week, and then try it again. Good luck to everyone else who makes it out.

I’m an idiot, if a kind administrator could move this post to the Upland forum that would be great.

October 18, 2006 at 3:44 pm #22814Lip, I am picking up some started dogs from my trainer this week, so I will remind him to pass the word. I don’t buy cars without test driving them, so I suppose I better do some hunting behind Rufus one of these days.

October 18, 2006 at 10:19 pm #22839Give me a shout when you get it figured out. My brother was recently laid off, so he is usually bumming around with me two. I will probably have 2 or 3 dogs for the next two weeks, so we’ll have plenty of noses out there. If either of you two can shoot, we’ll have no problem bagging some birds. I know some good public lands from St. Cloud to Iowa, but I could be forced to hit some private land too.

October 19, 2006 at 3:30 pm #22857My brother is actually a great shot. Last weekend, after he shot about a half dozen roosters, he got a little trigger happy and shot a brown one. I made sure Mr. Hot Shot got plenty of crap for that.
I should quit being so critical of myself. I shot 6 times this weekend, and bagged two birds. I also walked through all the thick crap that the old guys wouldn’t, and flushed more than my fair share of birds. Nothing new for this guy.

October 19, 2006 at 4:15 pm #22863Ron,
Who needs dogs when you got Fife along????? We can run Fife 2nd. Let the real dogs out first and keep Fife locked up in the kennel at the truck, then unleash Fife for clean up duty. That means one more bird to shoot for each of us.

October 20, 2006 at 12:31 am #22889Rob,
Great idea.
Last year three of us were out hunting and all three dogs go on point, we got to the spot and nothing there. After a minute or so we started walking again and Fife takes one maybe two step and a bird flushes at his feet. I thought that the car ride home was going to smell like

RonOctober 20, 2006 at 11:32 am #22898One small problem, I just got off the phone with Fife’s better-half and she says that his obedience is poor. Never listens, doesn’t do what he is told.
I said “NO Problem” we have shock collars for just that. She only asks that if the collar works that she can borrow it sometimesRon

October 20, 2006 at 3:42 pm #22909Wow, I am away from IDA for 8 hours, and look at the crap that sneeks up while I’m gone. Ron, to think we had a legitimate conversation this morning after you knew the trash you were talking.
I went to see the girlfriend, and had a great time. I woke up this morning, kissed her goodbye, and now I get to go hunting for the next two weeks, so kiss my . Enjoy being trapped at work, while I am out flushing rooster and having my brother shoot them for me.
