We got three and lost one. The roosters seemed to flush wildly.
Just the beginning guys, the best is yet to come
Pick the corn and beans add some snowRon

October 15, 2006 at 2:49 pm #22519Since Bob is up on Vermillion Musky fishing I took the girlfriend down to a couple spots around Windom. Morning was slow with lots of hunters and only a few birds. One of the fields I hunt had a farmer combining earlier in the day so I drove back in the early afternoon. Man was it worth it. He finished his field at about 4:00, I waited about another 45 minutes after that. I was watching birds pour into the grass from the picked field for about a 1/2 hour and then decided it was time. The girlfriend has never hunted before so I was pretty intent on getting her a bird or two. Within the first 50 yards I shot 3 roosters and the dogs flushed about another 25 hens. I passed up shots on 4 in row to see if she could connect… Bang, bang, bang, but nothing fell. At the end of the field were the grass hits a treeline, all hell broke loose and I downed our fourth bird for the day. The numbers are up, can’t say how much with all the corn, but all the farmers are already working hard to get it all picked.

October 16, 2006 at 2:03 am #22549I saw one get shot yesterday in the tall grass of a WMA 20 yards from the parking area! We were getting ready for the evening hunt of early doe season. Later we flushed a hen point blank after dark walking back. The kids needed to wipe after that.
Today we saw the oddest thing. It was 7 am., the kids and I were in a blind waiting for a doe to mosey by. I see something messing around in the woods and it’s a couple roosters. One left and the other one flew all the way to the top of this big popple tree! A half hour later he flew by us and out into the grass. The kids loved that. I have never seen a pheasant fly up a tree have you? We heard many more cackling all morning.
Ferny.

October 16, 2006 at 4:42 am #22554Had a good day today. Wasn’t able to hunt Saturday. Went out with my Uncle at my folks place up by Cambridge from noon until 5:30. Saw about 12 hens and 6 roosters. I shot 2 times and got two roosters A definite first for me. Seems the birds were awfully spooky for opening weekend.

October 16, 2006 at 12:19 pm #22561Went out Saturday afternoon to the Bro in laws place. Worked for about 3 hours, then in the course of 15 minutes, shot the 4 roosters we saw, and went home.
I shot one that still had a little egg on its head , but it was definitely a rooster

October 16, 2006 at 6:00 pm #226085 hunters, 2 dogs, 19 roosters by 1:00 pm Sun afternoon. Our average age is about 60 so that was enough. Can’t wait until the corn is out!

Yes one time we were waiting for the bird to come into the roost. Some one says look at all those birds in the trees over there. So I grap the glasses out of the truck and took a peek. The were all pheasant maybe 20-30 bird in a few trees.
Last year in Iowa, we started out right at legal shooting hour and walked about a 100 yards and the trees came alive. Birds were flying out as fast as you could see. Not one guy shoot, we just watched. I will never forget that sight. A few other times also.Ron
