Heard LOTS of drumming in northern mn. I’m talking several different birds standing in one spot. Buddy in wi counted six different drummers where there were only 2 last year. Fingers crossed. I’m looking forward to DNR drumming count numbers.

Hey, that is good news!
When do the drumming counts come out?
Boy, now you got me dreaming of cool damp mornings, skirting the edges where golden tamaracs meet impenetrable alder thickets! Ahhhhhh………..only 5 months to go!

May 17, 2006 at 4:10 am #17649Told the dog about the reports and he’s out working on his pointing.
We can only hope it gets better than last year.May 17, 2006 at 4:10 am #446923Told the dog about the reports and he’s out working on his pointing.

That’s funny. As for last year, it can’t get worse.

grousePosts: 64May 21, 2006 at 5:49 am #17682It sure will be nice to see the grouse numbers on the up-swing again. We dedicated grouse hunters sure fall on some flatulant years, leaving us thinking of the “great” years that so often get overlooked. Hopefully the 40+ flush days are ahead of us.

May 25, 2006 at 2:33 pm #17703I hear ya. Last year I resorted to 2 major pheasant trips! I felt so dirty. This year I’m heading to the Grouse woods.

I Hear That!!! I’ll probably make one Iowa trip with my buds and for the dog. I got a feeling my dog will do ok on grouse once there are enough around to get her close to them. I only got her on one last year but she got birdy, tracked it a ways and flushed it so there should be no problems. My only problem is my major grouse partners all live in Wi and they’re already wining about buying non-resident licenses this year. One refuses all-together. I need to find some new grouse hunting partners but you know how hard that is to actually accomplish…the screening process can take years! I hate going up alone but I will do what it takes. I love grouse.

grousePosts: 64June 17, 2006 at 10:30 pm #17978Your Wisconsin buddies should be filling you in on grouse hunting spots over there, the Park Falls area is grouse heaven. Solo grouse hunting with a dog is very enjoyable. Party grouse hunting with more than two guys is a complete cluster, and unsafe in some circumstances. Grouse guru’s are difficult to come by, and good ones are even more rare. I was up in Ely this past week and saw only one ruffed grouse that could have been shot by my four year old. The grouse flew across the road and squatted down, where I flushed it once (flew 10 ft), and then it chose to run for the remainder of the walk. Suzuki, send me a pm.

August 9, 2006 at 1:13 pm #19170Getting closer. What trips does everybody have planned? I’m spending opener in northern Mn at friends place. If good I will find a motel to return early Oct with just my dog and I. Hopefully I locate some action in Wi but I am not very optimistic. At least anywhere near my cabin but we’ll see. I need to get 15+ miles away and resume searching. All this between pheasant trips. So much to hunt and so few weekends!!! No wonder Sept-Nov goes so fast.
