Late December Rooster Pics

    Here’s some photos of some late December, Iowa roosters my dad and I got late last week. We hunted south of the snow line as you can see in the photos. This photo was taken Thursday, December 29th. We only saw six rooster but were lucky enough to get the five that flushed within range. The population reports where very poor for the area we were hunting and I believe it. Like I said, we only saw six rooster and about 20 hens. (A pretty typical late season hen/rooster ratio.) At least four of the five birds were old birds. We could have shot about as many turkeys as pheasants this day.

    Here’s a picture of our Friday, December 30th hunt. This day we hunted a different area and saw many more pheasants.

    Check out the spurs on this old bird my dad got. This rooster waited just long enough for dad to get within range before he decided to bust out of the switchgrass. The spurs measured about 3/4″ long! The bird only had 22.5″ tail feathers. I shot a rooster early this season in the same area that had slightly shorter spurs but had 24″ tail feathers.

    Man those birds have some great color to them. Congrats on getting out with your Dad and dropping the on some beautiful roosters
