Went pheasant hunting Tuesday afternoon with my buddy and my dog Griffin. We went to a hand picked corn field just south of Rochester. The wind was bitter, the drifts were brutal, the walking was TOUGH, but the birds were there.
All in all we saw 5 turkeys, one of which I could have shot as it got out of a fenceline like a pheasant, 8 hens, 4 roosters, and 9 partridge. We both wiffed on the one pheasant we could have shot, did not shoot at the turkeys and I got a triple out of the covey of partridge. Thats right, three shots- three birds. Shooting that triple made me realize that the old 870 is just fine and my fancy pants friends with their $2000 O/U can keep them . It was a great day- heading to Ia for some Christmas birds and back here for the last day of season. The dog was beat up from running through chest deep snow but did a perfect retrieve and slept good last night. It is good for him- I was going to have to change his name to Tubby pretty quick
