Couple of Iowa pheasant questions

Is it true if you buy a license after the 15th of December it is good for the next year?

Is Iowa gun deer season still open? Is it dangerous to be out with a dog during the gun deer season? I assume most public land is open to deer hunting.

    Thanks

Thats been their policy for several years now but I’d call ahead to make sure. I beleive shotgun hunting for the second season ends tomorrow. Some muzzle loading may still be open but I’ve not found them to be a safety hazard. Hunting has been good but its harder and more work in the snow. Good luck.

I went out on sun. Most of the pheasants are in crp plots or in groves. I did walk some crp and all of the pheasants would flush 40+ yrds in front of us. The snow did make for some hard walkin but its worth the work if you can shot a limit.

The 2nd Iowa shotgun season does not end until this coming Sunday evening (12/18). There is another late special doe only gun season as well which runs in January. In the southern counties this late season includes center-fire rifles which is a first for Iowa (at least since I was born in 1957). If I were going to pheasant hunt this coming weekend I would put a inexpensive blaze orange vest on my dog. Iowa law says you have to wear at least one item of blaze orange while pheasant hunting.

2006 licenses are available. My daughters usually get me a combination hunting/fishing license for Christmas. Keep in mind that if you purchase a 2006 license that it is not valid until after the first of the year. In other words you will need a 2005 license to hunt until January gets here. There are still plentyof pheasants to be had even here in Dubuque County. The birds are bunched up. I saw a good 25 birds together this past Sunday. They were in a thicket that I could see through because of all the snow. I wasn’t hunting but I doubt if one could have gotten anywhere close to these birds.

No eyehunter – that 2006 license is absolutely good starting December 15th, 2005 if purchasing the following years. I have had friends from out of state that would come down and essentially buy their licenses every other year – though in the purchase years they cannot hunt until after Dec. 15… if the soft snow stays it makes hunting much easier – hard to get close in the crunchy stuff. Good luck, lots of flouro orange for you and the hound – hunt the grass and stay away from heavily timbered areas. Chuckles
