Well after I dropped of my daughter today at school, I drove to my hunting area and started knocking on doors to get some pheasant hunting land. I started at past owners that I have dealt with and got some YES sure you can hunt. BUT I got one NO from a farmer that I have hunted his land for years. The reason was a fellow bird hunter and his group was given permission to hunt his land and SHOT one of his dogs .This really made me mad that someone who calls themselves a hunter would do this.
I am going to his house and help him split some wood next week and he is going to talk to the family and see what they want to do.
Remember to treat their land like you owned it, if not better. Shut the gates behind you, do not litter, remember to tell the owner about any bad fencing and most of all treat the land with respect!! Stop in for a chat after you are done.
It helps to sent a Thank You card after the season.
I also got some new land in the area as well as some No’s but it doesn’t hurt to ask. I tell my friends that I hunt with that I am use to rejection as I been shot down by more woman than land owner

Last week I spent some time driving around and asking permission. I stuck around home which is west of the TC. I got nothing but NO’s. Most of the places I stopped at were all in the process of being sold off for development! A few of the other places were being hunted by owners and friends of owner. A few of the owners had a bad outlook on hunters…to much trespassing, fields ripped up with wheelers, ect. A few boneheads ruin it for the rest of us! It’s all good, I have LOTS of property to hunt 1 hour west but it would be nice to have a couple places within minutes. I still have a few properties I’ve been eyeing up . All a guy can do is ask permission, show respect and hope for the best. With all the development out in my area permission’s gonna be tough to get, but, I’ll keep plugging away and get a few properties by the time season starts.

    Good Luck,

    Ron,
I think I remember you telling me about that guy. Isn’t that the first place we hunted that one day? If I remember right we flushed a few nice birds on his land too. I am amazed that you are able to find as much land as we hunted last year. By no means are there tons of birds up there, but there was still plenty of action.

Down here in SW Minnesota I guess I don’t even try. Land and hunting are both like gold around here. I ask farmers when they come into my work, and they all basically laugh at me. They either hunt it themselves or somebody pays them a pretty penny already. Come late season I think I might go knocking on doors because all the deer and wimpy pheasant hunters should be done by then.

Sorry to hear it Ron. Yes we must set good examples cause it opnly takes one A-hole to ruin it for everyone. Make sure you take good care of the land you hunt on and the owner who allows you to enjoy the best thing in the world. The OUTDOORS!
