This spring I got my new partner. Till now, she has been the most stuborn Golden retriever I have ever owned! But Two nights ago somone turned on the switch! We were working the bean field out behind the house when she pulled up. She looked at me as to say “Now what”. Two bounds after the command came the noise I had been looking for. The rooster jumped but she didn’t. What a great moment.

I know there will be some shots at the bread. Here’s my response in advance!

She is only six months old so there is no consistancy. But it was fun to see.

What a great moment ! Congrats on a great first flush

I sitll remember my Labs first Flush and First retrieve (different times) as though it were yesterday! His were also @ 6 months. His first retrieve was on a downed bird that two other dogs could not find. So I sent him on a blind retrieve and here he comes back, rooster in mouth held up high. I was one proud Poppa after those other Older experienced dogs could not find her His first flush was on a chukkar on a game farm that I saw the Chukkar first and watched him run across the birds trail and nosed the trail right to the bird Get used to being a proud Dad and make sure to take plenty of pics of your adventures together, cause it goes by Fast

I will! The adventures have started. I love it.

The tuff part has been remembering all of the same memories of my last dog. She hunted for 11 of 13 years. It was hard to replace her.

I am the same way too. My older lab is 13 years old now, and I still remember the very first trip to Nebraska where everything clicked, it was just like someone flipped a switch. It is a great feeling to see all of the hard work that you put into the dog pay off- what a great feeling. In all of the hunting trips I have done with this dog that 1st one was the most rewarding feeling that I have had. The flip side now when I hunt him I have to carry him out of the field , it sucks to see your best buddy get old. Enjoy the time with your hound, and great job on the rooster, ka ka ka ka ka ka…bang

I remember my Goldens first retrieve 20years ago.I shot a rooster that landed in the middle of a frozen pond with only a half inch of ice.She wasn’t big enough at 4 months to carry it,but she walked out there and dragged it to the edge.Glad to hear your story.

Congrats, it’s a blast isn’t it! Training young dogs…nothing like it, the way they look at you, the look on they’re snout when they push that first rooster. I love it! This by chance isn’t the Chris in Montrose is it?

Congrats on a big moment. Ohh the first time . My first was a rooster on Halloween. I felt as if my kid had just scored the winning TD in the Super Bowl, when that mutt brought me that bird . It only gets better. My dog and I will hunt all day without voice commands, and to top it off, he canopen the fridge, get a beer, and bring it to me. Just keep training, and praise the good things.

    Thats great news.
I have to agree with the others that all the work that you put into her you will get back 10 fold.
I also remember my GSP first rooster, it was opener in Iowa. Saturday he stumbled around totally lost, as the day went by he started pointing hens. I would walk up and flush them and let them fly away he would give me THE look. Sunday was cold and sleating after a few hours he gave me a great point as I walked up I could see the roosters head inches from his nose. I flushed the bird and unloaded,5 shots, my gun. The rooster was dead after number 2 but there was NO way I was letting that bird get away. He than retrieved the bird and brought it to me and layed it in my hand. I was walking on cloud 9 after that.

    Good luck with the pup.

This chat proves a point. Hunting is NOT about killing somthing. It’s about family, freinds and four legged buddies. There is nothing better.

My Springer chased up four pheasants last night in Frontenac State Park. Seeing lots of birds around. Should be a good year.
