There was an article in Thursdays Pioneer Press about a wild cat population in Anoka that numbers in the hundreds. There is a no-kill shelter from Hastings that has been spaying and neutering the ones they can catch. In todays paper there was a blurp stating that there is 73 million wild cats in the woods and fields across America. Jokingly it was printed “almost makes us want to urge the DNR to establish a wild cat season” My (now deceased) grandfather used to shoot any “wild” cats he encountered while bird hunting. With that many cats how many pheasants, grouse and quail are in there diet? Would you shoot to kill any cat you encountered while bird hunting? I don’t know if I would or not but after reading the article I just might!!

Here in south dakota we call wild cats ditch cougars and they are fair game at any time or place. Two of my good friends are in school for wildlife and fisheries management and were told in many places wild cats are the number one predator of pheasants because of high numbers, we always try to bring those high numbers down. Some may look at that as wrong but they are not a natural predator and two years ago two of us shot 32 in just the fall hunting and fishing season.

Sometimes its hard to tell whats a wildcat and what isn’t but if i see one out where im hunting and it looks like a ferrel cat i shoot it. I know they do go through nests and kill the young chicks even after they’ve eaten. I heard there used to be an old law here in Iowa that if a cat was farther then 100yrds from any house it was legal to kill it. When my son went too his hunters education classes i asked if that law was still on the books. The officer said that he didn’t know of any law like this and said because of all the lawsuits it might be wiser to not shoot one. He said he knew they do alot of killing of wild birds and rabbits but wasen’t sure of the law on this subject. Most wild cats i see run at the site of a human unlike domesticated ones that live on a farm or who has owners and is fed regularly. If they look like thier on thier own and run like any other wild animal i thin them out. I’d rather eat pheasants, quail and rabbits then cats.

I’m with Jigs. I had some sort of gun in my vehicle year round when I lived in SD. You never know when your headed out fishing and come across a skunk, badger or potty cat. My rule, over 100 yards from a house, bye bye. Even the domesticated cats are hard on game. I say blast em!!!

KILL all outside cats. They are not like other creatures and kill when hungry. They like to play with another creature and kill just for sport. The only safe place for a cat is in the house.

I know a guy that has an AK 47 that would work well for this!

    Pets should be under control.
Although I have a neighbor that lets his cat run free…and I’d love to use it for target practice when it’s waiting for the young blue birds to hatch…I don’t…because I know they are attached to it.

Prairie Lions, thats what me and my buddies call’em and yes when they come across us in the field its the last sight they see. Feral cats are killing machines. Its not like they are on the endangered species list.

OK, so I’m a tough guy and I’ve killed my share of cats. Sunday night, I’m getting the boat ready. I’m in and out of the house getting tackle trays etc… On my last trip, I notice something orange dart across the room. Now I’m when I see it’s a cat. This thing is scared. I want to go in the house and get a “weapon” but my better judgement opened the door and let the little b@st_)d go. If I catch him again, it’s all over. However, I didn’t know if I wanted to kill one of my neighbors pets. I hope he ate a big helping of mouse poison while he was in there!!!
