I headed down South to do a little Deer / Pheasant Hutning the day after the day of Thanks. I encountered 6 deer total in rainy/sleety Friday morning. 3 does, 2 fawns and a little six pointer . Good morning except for the weather. I hit the truck and watched a hunting DVD, warmed up and dried out. I went and checked on a few stands after the rain let up about 11:00am at the other Farm. Just to make sure no gun hunter decided to take them .

I started to hunt for birds around 1 pm. I was hunting a CRP field. I saw a group of birds (6-8 roosters) flush about a 100 yards ahead of me after my dog quarted into the plowed field . They must of been on the field edge ????

That was all he needed cause he started to lock up and point from there on out . He locked up on a bird, I walked up flushed it and it was a hen. He did this on the next four birds right in a row within 30 yards of each other. What a sight to see! The last bird flushed and finally a rooster got up! Lucky for me I shot him. We walked the rest of the field out to the end, knocking up a few more hens. We got to the last 10 yards of the field and Rufus was on point again with his foot up, head tilted, and tail just a wagging #3/4 staff. I walked up to get into position, gave him the flush command and up came a rooster. Picture perfect flush, there was only one problem after shooting three times (emptying my gun ), the bird was still flying . Oops! Rufus looked back and gave me the look (What the $#@! are you doing?). I then had to decide if I was going to sit in my stand or get my last rooster. I took one look at Rufus and chose the rooster. I walked diagonally across the big CRP field and got up a group of birds (6) with two roosters. Our day was done and what a day it was. Here is a pic of my buddy and I after a great day in the field.

Thanks for the reminder, Lip Ripper. Our bunch is heading to western Minn this weekend and I have been handling it pretty calmly. Until now. lol

    Good story lip.

Rooster season is going to be starting shortly for this cat. Only 4 more days of mally shooting.

Is that a pointing lab? I’ve read some stuff about that breed but have never personally seen them. It is sort of interesting to me, a flush dog trained/bread to point. I guess it’s like a duckhunter shooting pheasants. It’s tuff at first, but we get used to it. So physically, are these labs any different then a flush lab?

This is just natural ability. His Mom was trained as a pointer, but his Dad is just a flusher. He goes in streaks and depends on the situation. Sometimes he points sometimes not. I’ve never trained him to point but it sure is coool sometimes when he does. One of the coolest points I’ve seen is Him and My Buddies Lab in ND locked up on a hen and a Rooster They were no more than 2 yard from each other Nose, to Nose Locked up on a bird. It was cool thing to experience with your best hunting buddy!

There is no physical diference that I know. I’m headed out tomorrrow I will try to see if I can get a pic of him pointing. Although he will be with 2 other Labs that don’t point. So he is aittle more agressive to flush. You know the whole competition thing . Tomorrow I leave for ND for a week. I will be bow hunting along with Roosters. I’ll see if I cant get some video or pics. Good Luck!
