Well the opening weekend was a little bit of a surprise. Mostly from the miserable weather on saturday morning. It was pretty cold and horribly windy and there was a ton of standing corn, but my 2 friends and I were able to overcome those things and we managed to get 8 birds btween us. Sunday the one guy that was going with us(skippo)haha had to nurse a hangover in the morning so it was just me and Little B out with the dog. It was a beautiful day and we had our 6 by 1:45. It was great. We missed the first bird of the day and I think that pissed the dog off so she didnt give us a chance on the second one. She nabbed him before he got up to where we could shoot Thak god it was a rooster. I don’t know what the law reads about if the dog catches a hen? But that is the first time she has ever done that and we got a pretty big kick out of it. Man the birds sat tigt this weekend giving the dog a good chance to work some birds and really show her stuff. This is the first time Little B has hunted over Copper, but I am sure it won’t be the last. Little B has the pictures for both days on his digital camera so I will get after him to get them posted. And on another high note we didn’t knock down a single bird that we didn’t find. And Little B showed his shooting knowhow with a great triple on roosters. He shot all three from one stance. It was a lot of fun and I hope evryone else had good hunting too. Too bad skippo wasn’t there. Maybe next time Josh. Haha. How did everyone else do on birds this weekend????

    Nick,

Did you see a lot of birds? Just heard that the count for Iowa was down anywhere from 40%-50% depending on the area. Sounds like you had a good time anyways and good to hear you found all the birds you knocked down. Nothing wrong with consuming a few to many acholic beverages. Guy, has to lite it up every once in awhile ya know.

I don’t think the population is down at all. I think they are in the corn. We saw a ton of birds, but especially when we walked standing corn. Maybe it is just our area, but I don’t think the population is down. But we definately saw more birds walking the corn and hunting stuff right next to where farmers were combining. On Sunday we saw a lot of groups of birds and not just singles, we were seeing like half a dozen at a time getting up and we havent even hunted my best spot yet. Maybe next weekend the corn will be out around my secret spot

I agree with you on all the corn that is still in. I didn’t see alot of people hunting on sat. It was a mad house last year. From the weekend that I had, there is a lot of room for improvement since I only see one bird the hole weekend but I think things will get better when all the corn comes out.

The first one’s saturday, lighting’s pretty terrible…. looked better when we took ’em. This one’s sunday. There’re still birds to be had, by the way. Didn’t hunt Monday, got a limit on Tues. and one this afternoon.

    Happy hunting,
    Sean
