I can not wait for the opener in just a little under two weeks. My german shorthair is highly anticipating it as well. I am a little bit worried because I think that there will still be a lot of standing corn, but hopefully my trusty dog Copper will be able to put us on a few. Here is a picture of us last years’ opener. We limited out by 11:00.

My GSP (Abby) is an 8 year old female, how about yours?

My GSP is a 3 year old female. I bought her locally and didn’t know a thing when I picked her out, but with a lot of help training her, she is doing just awesome. Last year we shot more than one-hundred pheasants over her head. I think this year we are going to try to find a stud dog to breed her and have some puppies this spring.

I have good news and bad news about the Iowa opener this upcoming weekend. I will start off with the bad news first. There is going to be a ton of standing corn left. My dad is a farmer and is usually one of the first ones done in our area, but still has a lot left. Iowa had some bad weather this summer that knocked down a lot of corn so it is slow going for the farmers. Now for the good news: While my dad combines he has been checking out the pheasant numbers and he hasn’t seen this many birds for a really long time. He said they are everywhere. There are all ages too. Our opinion is the flooding this spring made it so the birds had a second hatch. I was excited by this and took the dog out by my house for a walk down by the crick and she pointed about half a dozen birds in about a hundred yards of walking. I was amazed how tight they sat, they werent spooky at all like they have been in the past. I got some really nice pictures of the dog on point, but I seem to have left the digital camera at my parents house. I probably wont see any of you out there as I will be hunting all private land near Dysart, IA. And if that doesnt work I will be hunting very close to where my dad is combining Good luck to everyone this Saturday.

5 days and counting…… Man I hate opening day, well at least the night before. Seems that I can’t ever get to sleep the night before. Hell, 2 years ago I was so excited that I thought I had everything in my truck before we left. I mean I double and triple checked everything… dogs, lic., snacks, drinks, extra boots and socks, shells….. got half way to the 1st field and realized I forgot my damn shotgun in the garage…….. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

I too agree that the standing corn is going to make it alittle tougher. But hey, gotta leave some for later in the season, right.

Good Luck to everyone and have a safe hunt.

ya I can’t wait but I will be the one guy that is working in the field. I am just hopping for a little bit of rain so it will stop the people that only go out there on the opening weekend and thats all they go out. That is one plus about all the corn that is in the field. There will be more birds for latter. I think that I will work all night so I can try to get a couple of birds on sat. And you guy are right, we were done with corn the opening day last year and this year we don’t even have half of it done. There are some guys that haven’t even started. I am talking about north Iowa around algona and mason city. Good luck hunting and say

I have to work nights Wed, Thur, Fri and Sat. So I probably won’t be out opening weekend at all. Actually doesn’t bother me too much. Could be a lot of corn still standing. Didn’t have any luck taking a couple boys out for the youth opener because the birds all stayed in the corn.

The last couple of years I have hated opening weekend. Too many “one timers” out there. Getting pelted by #6s from 80 yards away, untrained dogs, rude “hunters”, and trespassers on your private lands just irritated the crap out of me. I’ll go in the middle of the week.

Here it is 4 in the morning, and i am too excited to sleep any more. I drove around today and saw lots of birds in the ditches. I am pumped. We also walked a crick for half a dozen mallards that we saw go down on it, but somehow disapeared into thin air. We saw a few roosters flying out ahead of us while we walked it. I have to be up in another hour so i think i will spend my last hour doublechecking I have all of my gear. Have to be up that early to get the one public spot i like to hunt. Last year someone slept there in their truck overnight. so hopefully I will beat them there this year. Gonna be sitting there at 6:30 and season starts at 8 so i am confident. Anyways good luck to everyone and have a good hunt. Hopefully I can post some pictures of some nice roosters later today.
