With the cool weather we’ve been having I know alot of us are thinking about the up coming season.
    Here is a quick checklist
August is a great month to check in with land owners and farmers about getting permission to hunt their land again this year.I always check in every year even though some of these places I’ve hunted for years. It’s also a good time to try to get into a few new places.
Start to get a some conditioning in also at this time. There are alot of hunters who do not work their dogs enough and then when season starts they wonder why their dogs can’t hunt for more than a hour or two.Start off with small runs and work into larger type runs as the season gets closer. It will also help the hunter to get a few miles of field work on their legs as well.Remember to take a small water bottle so the dogs can get a quick drink while their out working in the field.
A good quality dog food is a must for today’s active type of hunting dogs.I’ve only used Purina products so thats all I can recommend.I’ve fed ProPlan,Purina One,and Hi Pro with great results. You’ll need a food that is high in Fat(15%) and protien(27%).This will help your dog recover better between hunts.
Also get the guns out and ready, maybe a little trap shooting so your hunting buddies don’t laugh when you miss those birds.
I also get a little box of first aid stuff ready incase there is a injury to a dog or person.I’ve used it many times for my dogs and also on myself.
Hope this list will help a few upland hunters.

Have to work opening day, but have4 days off after that. We will be hitting some small private grounds those days. I tend to stay out of the larger public areas opening weekend – too many “Once a Year” folks often with untrained dogs roaming around. Getting pelted with bird shot and having unruly dogs pester you really ruins the day for me!

Had Tucker out for exercise, got the boy a new shotgun, got mine all cleaned up again and ready to go. Water jug and bottles ready. Need to check and restock the First Aid kit though.

If you really want to get your dog in shape (especially pointing dogs) get a roading harness and a couple lengths of heavy chain and road your dog while and have it pull the chain. It’ll really build some strength, muscle, and endurance.
