I don’t have a lot of experience but I use a Tri-tronics 60. It works well for me. It has several settings and a tone that I use to call the dog when she is to far away. My lab is a very gentle female and never had to use above a “2” but for those hard headed males it does go to “5”. Price wasn’t too bad ant about $300 I think.

August 12, 2004 at 2:45 pm #2877I picked up a ezt 1000 from DT systems. My other one pooped out on me after 10 years.Never had any problems with that one and I’m hoping this one will be big enough to handle him! Before the old one crapped out, he was doing really well in the commands. Now I need to start all over.

buckmasterPosts: 776August 12, 2004 at 3:56 pm #2879I just picked up a Tri-Tronics Sport 60s as well and I think it is great. Everyone will probably have a different opinion, but that warning tone really works. Not sure about you, but I would rather give the dog a warning before actually giving it the jolt. Like mentioned before, I have never use mine above “3” on my female german wirehair, but for those males there is always the extra zip just incase. It was priced at $259.99 + tax. What it comes down to is clearly up to you. Good luck

August 12, 2004 at 4:38 pm #2880I’m not a firm beleiver in that warning tone, When I say “come”, I want him to come now! That’s the reason I got the collar,I want him to mind when called. I don’t want to have to repeat myself. I do enough second guessing myself all the time. Maybe I’m just mean!!!!

August 12, 2004 at 5:07 pm #2881I’m training mine without electronics. At 1 1/2 we already have a good rythem in the field. I can certainly see the times a zapper would come in handy but I just work through it. Now if I could just get on some birds close to home!! Sorry to get off track Chap. This darn weather has got me so fired up to hunt.

August 12, 2004 at 5:57 pm #2883I thought I would throw my 2 cents @ you Chappy!
I have the Tri-Tronics Field 70. I really like it and it fits right into my vest (vest has special slot for it. It is a Cableas Ultimate Hunting Vest, I think Columbia makes a similar vest) for Pheasant and has easy quick access to trigger it. Also has a a holder shoulder strap for duck and training. I had it for 4 years and the battery went bad on it last Fall. I called up Tri Tronics and the customer service was really helpful. I could buy new batteries for it for $55 or have a check up done for $65. The ended up just giving me a brand new one for the $65.00 Yes I had to pay to get it replaced, but I know I was not the best on the Battery maintenance and making sure it was charged every month in the off season. I am huge on customer Service and I give T-T an A+. This unit is also adjustable on the transmitter from 1 to 5. I hate to say it but I have wacked the old boy on 5 a few times and he just let out a holler and kept going one time ! Those pig head Male Labs!
I believe in using the collar as long as the dog is introduced right to it. Make sure they learn and know the command WELL, before introducing thedog to stimulation for a non response. For most cases (99.5%), I run 2 on the transmitter. This seems to make him uncomfortable, but does not cause him to yelp . I believe this is key. Each dog has a different threshold where this is. I suggest find this level for your Dog and use it!
As I said just my 2 cents.

August 12, 2004 at 6:36 pm #2884Oh…. I know I’ll use it, I just don’t like the warning beep to let them know it’s coming.

I have a D.T. Model 77DT and have been very happy with it, I have had it for 7 years. I do not remember for sure what I paid for it back then but I think it was around $150. The only problem is that I lost the remote last fall on the last day of the season, I just sent an e-mail to DT to see if it can be replaced, and I will let you know what I find out. My remote has settings from 1 to 6.
99% percent of the time I do not have to go any higher than 2, in fact I very rarely even have to zap my dog anymore she knows what the collar is for. I have an 8 year old female German Shorthair, she was one year old her fist hunting season and did very well that first year. The only problem I had with her back then was the first time a hen got up and I did not shoot she gave me this look like “what’s wrong with you why didn’t you shoot! ” Then she said “if you’re not going to get that bird I will ” and she was gone like a bolt of lighting. I almost lost her that day it took me over an hour to find her that’s when I bought the collar, it was one of the best investments I ever made she caught on real fast. She sticks close now and looks back often to see where I am at. The best piece of advice that I can give you on any collar is to use it as a training tool not as a punishment, you can ruin a good dog when the collar is not used properly. To figure out what setting to use for your dog start out on 1 and work your way up until you find the number that will make the dog yelp. In other words if the dog yelps on 3 turn your setting down to 2 and that will be the setting you should use 99% of the time. Use setting 1 along with your commands so eventually he will respond to the collar as well as voice commands, there will be times when the dog can’t here you but you will be able to call him back with setting 1 and he will not perceive it as a punishment. When a dog has been trained properly with a collar they get excited when you put it on because they know they are going hunting, my dog Abby goes nuts every time I get the collar out. I think DT also has a training video that might be worth checking out.

Good luck with the training and happy hunting!

August 13, 2004 at 8:57 pm #2901I have a Tri-tronics 200 which is a real nice collar. The pro trainer I use also uses Tri-tronics but recommends Dogtra if you want to save some money. Also one of the winningest GSP trialers in the country uses Dogtra so they must be a decent unit. I’m acutally looking at a Dogtra 2-dog collar now that I have 2 mutts to chase in the grass.

http://www.dtsystems.comThe problem that we run into with the 77DT series is that they are one of our oldest models and we no longer produce or sell them. Very often we can not even get parts for them. Also, most of the 77s were completely sealed units and cannot be opened to be repaired. Your best option would be to trade your unit in on one of our newer, more technologically advanced models. We accept 77s as trades on any of our latest models. You can view these and get their specs at:

If you decide that there is a model in which you might be interested just let us know and we can talk about the pricing. If you have any further questions just let us know.
I sent back a reply to see how much they will give me for my old collar, I do not think it will be much. I checked out the following web sites:
http://www.dtsystems.com
http://www.tritronics.com
http://www.dogtra.com
I am bummed out that I can not get a replacement remote for my DT77. The thing I liked about this unit is it was very simple to use it had six settings and one button to push to send the stimulation. Now it looks like the least amount of settings you can get on a DT is 20 why in the world would you want or need more than 6 settings Also on more than one brand you can choose from continuous stimulation or momentary stimulation or both, on my DT you just held the button for the amount of time of stimulation, simple. I can not see spending $400 on a collar, Ryan you said that you have the Tri Tronics 200 lite I do not see this model on there web site, do they make it any more and if not do you see one that is similar to yours? How much did you pay the the 200 lite if you do not mind me asking?August 14, 2004 at 8:47 pm #317355

Found a charger that goes into a Cig. Lighter and it charged the collar right up! Sweet Daddy, that makes me a happy camper. Now all I have to do is call my buddy up and have him return the 1 I bought.
