Drum counts are not encouraging but with a caveat. I can’t wait. Season opens later than usual for Minnesota this year.
My favorite area put out suprisingly good numbers last year but other spots were dismal. I couldn’t believe how few I saw in far north Wi last season. Good area are definitiy limited in these low years.

I havent been seeing much eiether. All during deer season is when I saw them in large numbers. They go through those 7 year cycles, so sometime their populations should be gitting larger.

Like I told my wife the other day. I only have about 3 or 4 grouse peaks left in my life. Bummer. By the way cycles are said to be closer to 10 years give or take a couple. I would say this year or last was the bottom so hopefully the next 5 will just keep getting better. Nothing like those 3 years on top. Nothing lights my fuse like seeing grouse. Been doing it since birth!

I’ve noticed that I don’t hit fewer grouse at the bottom of their population cycle

Someday I’ll learn how to shoot a shotgun!

Gratuitous meat shot from last year. All shots from one weekend last season.

I’m ready! — my dog kicked up 2 on the path to my deer stand last weekend. I was really proud of him and I could tell he was having a blast. With skeet league wrapping up it’s almost time!!

I hear ya. My trap league ended last week. Took the dog out last night but no birds up. She worked good though.

I will be pounding the grouse a little harder this year in the southeast with my 6 month golden. The bird population is good and hopefully he will be as good as my former golden.

My dad lives north of Grand Rapids and he was pleasantly surprised by the amount of drumming this spring and early summer.

That’s good news. I’m heading “north” of GR on opener.

I’ll be up at Rainy this weekend. Since the weather may be bad at times I will probably get a chance to scout around the area and see how the birds are looking in that area.

Didn’t see or hear anything positive about good numbers near Ifalls.
