Underwater Camera Purchase

    Hello Everyone,

I am looking at getting an underwater camera. I currently have a marcum LX 7 flasher. I don’t want to upgrade that for a couple of reasons. Not a big fan of having the transducer plus a camera down the hole – feel like it’s more for a fish to get wrapped around. Also, the main reason I am getting it is to try to entertain my kids more in the fish house. Plus $400 plus shipping to upgrade I feel like I could purchase a nice camera? I did some research tonight and of course marcum is probably the best camera? Also did some reading about the Vexilar wireless camera. Picture goes right to cell phone or tablet and multiple devices at one time – very interesting. Just looking for some direction and advice. I am willing to spend an extra $100 or so if the money is worth it for camera options/quality of picture. What would everyone purchase? So many options. Marcum, Vexilar, aqua view, etc. Thanks. Chad

While I don’t own a camera, one thing to consider with kids, regarding to cameras that stream to phones or tablets would be the high possibility of something that small going down a hole. With the regular cameras that come with a screen, the kids can watch while not feeling the urge to hold or touch.. would hate to lose a phone or tablet that way.. just something to consider

I agree with Brett but if you want a great camera go with a GoPro Hero 4, with the Bluetooth. You can do so much more too, make videos on the ice, underwater, better quality. Only thing is that you’ll have to rig up some sort of rope to put down the hole…Look up YouTube videos and you’ll be amazed at the quality.

Chad if you like the ability to view your camera from a tablet or phone Marcum has a great option with there Pancam. It gives you the ability to set the camera remotely and control it from your device. I played with one at the ice show and can’t wait to get one on the ice!

I’ve put a few hours behind a number of brands of underwater cameras.

The Sony Super HAD II CCD camera and the Darkwater LED Lighting will blow the competition away. True if you’re using the camera in 10 feet of water on a clear sunny day any quality camera will work.

Start talking 25 feet deep, overcast or at night and it’s another world.

Black and white or color, it’s yours at a push of a button.

The VS485C is unbelievably priced at $399.00.

Just a few short years ago this unit with a 1″ larger screen was going for $800.00.

PS I think it’s great you’re thinking of the kids out on the ice!

Keep in mind that any camera (including the older Marcum prior to the red bags) that do not have the Darkwater LED Lighting will be worthless below 25 feet or at night because of the “snow storm effect”. The led light reflecting of suspended partials making the camera well, useless.
