The first time I seen one I thought they looked terrible. But they are starting to grow on me. Some color combinations look terrible and will never grow on me
January 23, 2015 at 7:55 pm #1501768Different for certain. How is it with the cover off? Easy to work on?
How was the show? I like going but seems the last several years more and more floor space is dedicated to pontoons.
January 23, 2015 at 8:35 pm #1501785It’s a pontoon powerboat show for sure. The main guys had big displays of fishing boats. Lots of Rangers, Larsons, SBC had a big display, Alumacraft, Lund, Yar-Craft and a couple of Warriors.
Pontoons everywhere and lots of speedboat type stuff. Larson has their biggest display I’ve ever seen them have.
I’m a boat junkie so I’m going no matter what! I found it interesting that Hobie has a BIG display of their stuff there. Well worth the trip for me, your individual results may very.
January 23, 2015 at 9:03 pm #1501796I’m going, I always do. I’m also, a boat junkie. If it wasn’t a bad Idea I’d have a new boat every year! Maybe it’s not that bad….
It would be very fun, I suppose with the fifteen year loans if a guy just budgeted a monthly payment.
January 23, 2015 at 9:11 pm #1501801Considering I just bought a new truck a new boat is definitely out of the picture. Although………..I do have a couple to trade in or sell & there always is that Powerball thing.
FryDog62Posts: 3696January 24, 2015 at 7:26 am #1501856I attended the show and am in the boat that the Etec G2 is different looking but growing on me. I think they’ve made some engine refinements as well in the second generation.
Ford-Chevy debate but I would personally choose the Etec over the slightly louder and smokier OptiMax.
FryDog62Posts: 3696January 24, 2015 at 7:30 am #1501858And in regards to the Etec looks, it is definitely a more chiseled look. Kind of like the new Silverado. Some will like it and some will not. But this type of look seems to be working its way into more than just boat motors… The colors? Pick one out you like and call ‘er good —
January 24, 2015 at 7:39 am #1501867I like the looks of them. It’s about time someone started changing the style of an outboard.
January 24, 2015 at 8:49 am #1501883It’s different, but to me this is form following function so the look is only part of the story.
My understanding is that one of the main reasons for the new look is that these outboards have a full out-of-water tilting capacity that gets the lower unit completely clear of the water and not by just an inch or three. Not a feature many around here care about, but the saltwater guys who leave thier boats in marinans will love it.
Also I belive Evinrude has eliminated the traditional heavy single piece cowling on these in place of side panels that are easy to remove and easy to handle. They will also be vastly cheaper to replace if they are damaged or lost.
What I’ve read in the boating press is that this new configuration also opens up more engine possibilities and could pave the way for the first 400 HP.

FryDog62Posts: 3696January 24, 2015 at 9:01 am #1501886Wow 400! How will that troll down on my 16 foot Yar tiller? Looks like I need to upgrade (again)… always looking for an excuse
January 24, 2015 at 9:20 am #1501890After glancing at those pics, I just threw up in my mouth a little…
January 24, 2015 at 10:05 am #1501901I’d have to see one in the water and in person to make a personal judgement on the looks.
I do like that it looks like they can be somewhat color matched to the boat. Never liked buying a big expensive boat and motor package and being forced with the colors the motor manufacturers chose. Be it black, white, blue, etc..
FryDog62Posts: 3696January 25, 2015 at 7:07 pm #1502415Anyone know if the whole line of Etec engines will go to the new look or just above 200 hp?
January 25, 2015 at 10:15 pm #1502479FUGLY
Agreed. It will take a long time for it to grow on me. Good thing I do not have an Evinrude at this time. But to each his own.
And I agreed, too many toons and speed boats. I guess I will need to wait for the sports show in March to spend some $$$$.
January 25, 2015 at 11:48 pm #1502496Couldn’t stand them at first, but now they’re growing on me. Those G2s have some pretty neat features.
January 26, 2015 at 9:23 am #1502621I kinda like the styling, but I don’t like the orientation of the lettering.
January 26, 2015 at 9:36 am #1502631I kinda like the styling, but I don’t like the orientation of the lettering.
Maybe Evinrude figures most of their motors will be in the tilted up position waiting for a tow,,, while the Mercs go flying by. (sorry couldn’t resist)
January 26, 2015 at 9:40 am #1502633My first impression was “what the heck”. After seeing them for a while now its not gotten any better. The one I seen with camouflage sides looked the best. To radical of a look for my liking. Last thing I want to do is stand out while out on the water.
January 26, 2015 at 9:47 am #1502639The other thing I didnt get was the side access panels. Good luck with those if you need to get into them while out on the water. 6 screws on each side. At what point did the engineers decide this would be much easier to get into than one latch on the back and the whole top comes off? Hope it wasnt the same engineers that worked on the rest of the motor or that motor will be a treat to work on.
