Tying fluorocarbon

Does anyone have any recommendations for the best knot to use for tying fluorocarbon to the hook? Some websites say Palomar is the best, others say it’s the worst. I’m curious if there’s certain knots for different diameter line, for example 6 lb compared to 20 lb. Any insight would be appreciated.

Trilene knot hands down for me. I have never had a knot break or slip out. All break up the line somewhere. Number of wraps tho – vary with diameter. I average 5 with my 4-6lb. More with lighter – more like 4 with heavier.

Knots that go through the eye of the hook twice have been best for me. Uni knot with 2 loops through the eye, the San Diego Jam has been stellar knots. Wet and lubricate the line before cinching everything down!

I use the Uni-Knot. Also I moisten the line and and pull the knot together slowly.
I once read the heat generated by tightening the knot to fast was bad for flouro. I’m not sure if that is the case, but I never had a problem by doing those 2 things.

Eugene Bend is what a lot of the Bass pros use. very easy to tie. Its all I use to tie fly on flouro tippet for steelhead 4 to 8 lb test if it works for steelhead it will surely work for ice fishing.

I have always used a palomar knot and have never had it break or slip on fluoro. When you get down to the really tiny diameters though, it is a bit difficult to tie (especially with numb fingers).

I tie 20lb to 2lb fluoro with palomar and cant remember the last time I broke off a fish. After I pass the bait through the loop, I slide the loops up the line a bit and try to tighten the loops and the tag end simultaneously. I think if you crank down on the knot, then pull the tag end tight, the friction can fatigue the line.

I use a Palomar knor and have never looked back. I was told/read to always wet the knot if using fluorocarbon though

Palomar knot is the only way to go.

The Shaw Grigsby “no name” knot. I have had the palomar knot break on me too many times with fluorocarbon.

Individual knot tying skills varies. What’s a great knot to one person, may be a lousy knot to the next person. There are various knots that will give good results.

I use the Palomar knot with fluorocarbon. I think the most important thing is lubrication when pulling the knot tight. Seagars website recommends using chapstick as a lubricant.

I think that this lube idea is the best advice yet. As mentioned before, knots are NOT a one size fits all thing. However, getting any knot tight is the key to any knot’s success. Use some spit when you’re snugging up knots and you’ll likely have fewer problems regardless of the knot used.

Here’s a knot I use for all of my light fluorocarbon and mono line knots plus my knots using Nanofil and 832 and power pro.

I start with the simple “noose” tied on the tag end after it goes thru the hook’s eye as seen on the right. I double knot the loop with a simple overhand knot. As seen in the middle the loop is passed back over the jig and rides up on the main line. I wet the knot and line and snug it up on the main line then slide it down to the hook’s eye and give it a tug set the knot and then trim any tag remaining as seen on the hook at the left.

I’ve used this knot for a loooooong time and have yet to find one simpler to tie or stronger. I use this knot on lines from 2 pound test used for sunfish and crappies all the way up thru 17 pound test used on Lake Superior rigging.

I use the San Diego Jam Knot for fluorocarbon and braid 99% of the time for open water fishing. Only thing I do a double palomar for is frog fishing with braid. I fish 5-7 days a week during open water season, and I’ve never broke this knot with anything above 10 lb fluoro or braid – I’m serious too. This video is a great tip on how to tie it. – http://www.scout.com/outdoors/wired2fish/story/1466819-how-to-tie-the-san-diego-jam-knot

With any Fluroo knot, wet it down and tie a clean knot to avoid issues.
