The Twins will never go anywhere when they act like they’ve won the World Series when they beat the Yankees. The coaches and brass all say the moves they made should help win the division. TO hell with the division, build a team that will consistently beat the Yankees and then you’ll have something. Oh, wait…, that takes $$$$. Ahhh, Mr. Pohlad???
It takes money, sure. But it also takes a greater emphasis on basic things like base-running, creating scoring opportunities (stealing bases, bunting, not being a worthless piece of garbage when runners are in scoring position), not pulling a starting pitcher who is cruising after 5 innings and 70 pitches because he could face the 3rd-time-through-the-order boogie man, developing young pitchers, etc. The Twins are a middle of the road payroll – more than some teams that consistently perform far better than the Twins, but bad coaching and the hatred for historic baseball fundamentals is more to blame in my opinion.
It also only takes a tiny bit of research to see if the players they are trading for have underlying issues (Paddock, Mahle, etc.).
