Looks like he has a lane to slide to me. MLB just gets harder to watch.
wife made me go to tractor supply and i missed the Rocky blowup. didn’t think he had it in him. he needs to stagger the end of the rotation so that the BP isn’t dead on back to back nights with Bundy and Archer. neither of those guys can go 5 or more innings and keep the game in check.

…and a frame later, he’s blocked..
I gotta say though, now that Rocco is starting to lash out at umps, I find myself watching and thinking he’s acting and it’s all for show because people have been critical about him being emotionless. It’s all I can think when I watch him do it. It just looks forced and uncomfortable.
A frame later Sanchez has the ball, which makes it legal to block the plate.

Right, so those of us that grew up facing a catcher with the ball and blocking the plate was our license to knock him arse-over-tea-kettle in hopes of the ball flying free. How times have changed – –
And yes, I think Rocco is 20% mad at the call and 80% show. Remember his statements a week ago about somebody needs to start something…
I think Rocco was 100% mad today… And he was right, there is no way that should have been overturned, had it been called the other way, the call should have stood as called on the field. As far as his managing style, I cannot stand it, but I will say I am giving him this year to prove it… If we are playing in a terrible division and only need to play slightly above 500 to keep in first place, that is fine, but come september he better start running the boys out there and playing them every day to build some cohesion as we go into the playoffs. With out a playoff SERIES win, this year, we need to look for a different manager.
So if the throw is on the fouls side and the catcher catches it in foul territory by the plate the runner is automatically safe, because he is blocking the plate? Merrifield did not try to do anything to get around he went right at him.
The rule is too subjective. If Beckham didn’t take 5 steps to get the throw off we wouldn’t be having this discussion. He would have been out by 10 feet.
I don’t think Rocco was mad about the overturned call, he was mad someone overturned his Zen Garden in the dugout.

This is why the rule is so bad. The catch can be in the way of the runner as long as it isn’t a conscious effort to block the plate. So if he is making an action to catch the ball and the runner runs into him it is still legal. That is why the call is not black and white and shouldn’t be in the game and 100% shouldn’t be reviewable. Rocco was right when he said the umps on the field had nothing to do with it. They made the right call on the field and some idiot in NY thought he should overturn it.
Meerifield as much admitted he went straight at the catcher too.
The ball is in the box, in the air, before the runner comes near contact. Sanchez actually IS out of the way and bends a knee in at the end but he already has the ball AND is applying the tag!
This needed to stand. IF you want people to watch an exciting, action-packed game instead of yawning 2.5 hours into it ( including a timer on the pitcher AND on the batter -ENOUGH with the glove tightening and walking around the home plate circle)
Catching the fly ball and making an exceptional throw ( yes, he double, I think even triple pumped the throw) to get the runner out should be just that. Merrifield has a lane. If you are coming home and need to slide and the catcher can’t play HIS position? What’s the point?!
BAseball is the BEST but I am losing my passion for it and most other pro sports.
SLippery Stairs competition and Spikeball on ESPN 8 – The OCHO – “just can’t get enough of it!”
Jomboy has a great breakdown on this, ridiculous call (but not surprising in today’s MLB).
Yeah it’s pretty depressing watching what the game has become.
In other news, we could be in third place in the central after the Dodgers series. While we are playing them the tribe and sox are playing KC and Detroit.
All 3 will be a few games apart come September and then one will get hot and walk away from the pack.
Well the Sox will have to do it without Anderson. I honestly don’t think any of the three are good enough to get hot.

Agreed. The Twins could if their bats ever get hot but they haven’t all season. Frustrating.
He hasn’t located his pitches well in a month. Might get by the teams in the central but you’re gonna get killed by a lineup like the Dodgers if you aren’t hitting your spots.

The catcher is allowed to block the plate at the time of making the catch and after the catch, but not prior. That was the rule change, ala Buster Posey who would block the plate before having the ball. This was a terrible call.
Twins just don’t seem to have much going the last 6-8 weeks. No one in their lineup is much of a threat and the pitching is so-so. I can’t see them finishing much above .500 even with all the games vs. Detroit and KC left.

I agree the call was botched, but the rule is at best ambiguous… Its just ingrained in me if the catcher blocks the plate before the runner gets there that he should be able to knock the catcher into the back stop to get to the plate…you can’t just tip toe around a catcher when you’re running full speed just because he now has the ball in his glove and can completely block the dish. Its an all around bad rule. Will be interesting if the commissioners office tweaks the ruling after this season. They should ~
Why is Buxton not playing tonight??
There’s about 35 options, you can pick whichever you like.

I just thought he DH last night and did homer. So not playing tonight thought maybe I missed something.
I suppose it doesn’t matter anyway. This series against the Dodgers is painful to watch .
Now they are talking about it. A knee injury he aggravated in San Diego a couple weeks ago
If he gets an injury, it can flare up at any time in the future. He’s probably still sore from a bike accident in 2nd grade.
The best kind of ability is availability. Buxton is rarely that.
The Dodgers are RELENTLESS.
That is a good baseball team ( even against the Twins)

this the same guy who chipped his toof on a steak and missed time. i thought vanilla Joe milked his injuries but Buxy might make him blush? good thing both guys chose baseball over football or you wouldn’t hear much about them.
Shoot Mauer didn’t play a 100 games once in his career. Even later stages with his bi lateral leg weekness he was avg 140 games a year.
Anyone else find it strange that the Twins can never keep their top prospects healthy?
Buxton, Lewis, Kirilloff, Sano to an extent…etc etc
