The absolute worst move I’ve ever seen even by Baldelli. And that’s saying something. His lucky ass got saved. Take out your best reliever who throws 103 and has a splitter that neutralizes lefties, to bring in one of our worst relievers only because he’s a lefty to get the lefty lefty matchup. Only problem is the batter in question is hitting 320 off lefties.
What a moron. At least the fans booed him when he took him out.
June 23, 2022 at 8:02 pm #2131535Damn our manager is a genius. Now I can finish my case of lattes while weeding the garden.
what a whirlwind of emotions for ya! i can’t say i agree with Rocky but if you throw enough $hit at a wall some of it will stick. i like Thielbar but i think he needs to work on hiding the ball as he comes to the plate.
i think the skipper avoided a big time snafu. even Bremer couldn’t spit out an excuse for bringing in the lefty…..

didn’t need him, they worked out a guy with a history of elbow problems and thought it was a fair trade.

If they get a good year out of Paddock it will be a good deal. Rodgers wasn’t going to be affordable they was Falvey runs things.
June 23, 2022 at 9:47 pm #2131553I still don’t hate the trade. He was showing good signs before his elbow went bad. Hopefully he comes back and can find it again. He’s still young.
Not saying we couldn’t use Rogers right now though…..

June 24, 2022 at 9:39 am #2131600I don’t he’s hurt either, just can’t hit anything but a cookie down the middle.
And yes….. the fat kid is fat.
June 24, 2022 at 9:40 pm #2131759well that was a poor showing. Bundy throws another gem and the bats were dead again. i didn’t tune in until the 5th and they hit alot of balls hard but right at guys it seemed every time. that second baseman for the Rockies is a vacuum cleaner
June 25, 2022 at 9:19 pm #2131846great game tonight, not much drama but a one hit shutout is a big bounce back after getting blanked. rumor is Polanco is going to be back for the series with cleveland. this pitching staff is coming together quite nicely and no need to panic.
heard today that the Twins have had the most stints on the IL in all of MLB.
June 25, 2022 at 9:37 pm #2131851I love how two days ago Rocco says Buxton can’t run or swing and today he’s playing CF and running like a bat outta hell for a triple. I am so confused by the way he is handling Buxton. It’s like he’s trying to protect him from backlash but he’s actually making it worse.

The speculation is that it is something chronic – good days and bad days. Maybe fluid filling up in his knee or something? IDK

Yeah they’ve made that obvious. But a few days ago Rocco came out and said he couldn’t walk or swing a bat. It’s clearly not that bad if the next day you can throw him in CF and he runs out a triple like nothing is wrong.
June 26, 2022 at 9:51 pm #2131923See ya Wes.
LSU is hiring Minnesota Twins pitching coach Wes Johnson to the same position, a source confirmed to The Athletic. D1 Baseball was first to report the news.
Johnson is currently with the team in Cleveland for a series vs. the Guardians that begins Monday. He will remain with the Twins through Thursday before departing for LSU, per a source. The Athletic also learned that many on board Sunday’s team flight were unaware of the news that Johnson is leaving. The team held a mandatory meeting for staff and players once they arrived at their downtown Cleveland hotel.
According to a source, the Twins plan to promote assistant pitching coach Pete Maki to the lead pitching coach role. Johnson has served as the Twins pitching coach under manager Rocco Baldelli since 2019. He previously held the same role at the University of Arkansas, where he helped the Razorbacks reach the College World Series final in 2018.
Johnson will replace former LSU pitching coach Jason Kelly, who was hired as head coach of Washington last week.
The Tigers finished third in the SEC West this season with a 17-13 conference record and were eliminated by Southern Miss in NCAA Regionals earlier this month. LSU’s last College World Series appearance came in 2017 and it won its last national title in 2009.
What’s next for the Twins?
Dan Hayes, Twins beat writer: The timing of this move is shocking for the Twins, who start a five-game series at second-place Cleveland on Monday. The club only learned about the aggressive negotiations on Saturday. When Johnson departs — and it could be later this week — the team will temporarily replace him with bullpen coach Pete Maki, though it will be a “group effort” to fill Johnson’s big shoes. The Twins like the makeup of their pitching department but this is a blow nonetheless.June 27, 2022 at 8:05 am #2131934It’s so weird. I don’t know what the average MLB pitching coach makes but that seems pretty low. Wonder if the Twins low balled him because he had no experience when they brought him in. It’d be hard not to take double a salary but man, in the middle of a season seems awful dirty.
Walleye Man42Posts: 197June 27, 2022 at 8:48 am #2131941maybe he sees the bullpen blowing up as we get in the dog days of summer and wants to get a job before it does not look good!!

I didn’t see anything on the salary difference, but pretty shocking regardless. Imagine a NFL OC/DC left midseason to go to college? The whole sports world would melt down. Another bad look for the Silver Spoon Pohlad’s being cheap.

He is making $350,000 annually with the Twins which seems like nothing. LSU is paying him $750,000.

Apperently we have different ideas about what nothing is.

I also read that it’s closer to “home” for him and collegiate baseball game schedule is better than MLB. I suppose it’s all about your priorities..

OUR opinion of the money doesn’t matter. For an MLB coach that seems like next to nothing.
And Dutch it must’ve been $350,000 because all the reports are that he’s making more than double what the Twins were paying him and he’s making $750,000 with LSU.
June 27, 2022 at 3:43 pm #2132068Is Pete Maki taller than Wes?
Can’t imagine he wouldn’t be. Hey as a positive, Rocco said Wes was the guy that made most of the pitching schedules and plans so maybe that means we will see some different usages when it comes to the pitchers.
June 27, 2022 at 8:27 pm #2132100well sonny is going strong into the 7th?????
He’s not gone yet. But we can hope our starters will go deeper into games after his departure.
Walleye Man42Posts: 197June 28, 2022 at 7:55 am #2132130wouldn’t that be something if our starters could actually go 6. Good game last night hopefully today they can hit the ball Smeltzer and Winder going in the double header.
June 28, 2022 at 8:28 am #2132134Sonny Gray is a number 1. The guy just knows how to pitch. It’s so nice to see in this era of pitching that only focuses on speed and spin rate. Location and strategy still reign supreme and it shows when you watch a guy like Gray take the mound. Other than a couple starts this year he has been stellar.
Interesting to see what Winder looks like today and I hope Smeltzer can get back to stringing solid starts together like he did before he got Covid. That would be huge for this club.
June 28, 2022 at 9:05 am #2132150Looks like the reports were wrong on the terms. Johnson is making 380,000 with LSU with the possibility of being around 750,000 with incentives. He was making 400,000 with the Twins. He took the job because he wanted to be closer to his 12 year old daughter and spend more time with his family. I get that. Just wish it didn’t have to be in the middle of the season.
June 28, 2022 at 9:50 am #2132181Guessing it’s a lot less hours over the course of the year. Heard last night that MLB coaches are at the ballpark for 12-14 hours every game day/night.
Less hours and more money (potential) who wouldn’t do that?
