You did see that correctly! Hope I’m wrong and the Twins lock him up for less! Doogie followed up and said that number is closer to $89 mil over 5 years. Which would basically mean Wheeler wants the qualifying offer for the next 5 years as his new deal. Will pitchers be more aggressive to sign after seeing what happened to Kuechel and Kimbrel last year?

Four teams in the race for Wheeler currently including the Twins

Oh really? I saw something on Twitter saying otherwise. Essentially said a limited market on Strasburg and Cole, but several teams will be in on Wheeler. Hope I’m wrong. Market projects him for $16-18 mil but I’d be very surprised if he signed for less than $20 mil AAV.

Who knows what’s real and what’s not with the reports but that was reported last week and that just said they were the four teams at the front. Who knows what it looks like now. That’s why I the Twins need to be super aggressive and get out in front of other teams offers.

If the White Sox ever get some pitching/defense they could be a scary team in the near future.

I think Odorizzi was a prime example of this. He didn’t trust the market and took his QO. I think the market will go pretty fast once the Cole and Strasburg are off the table. But who knows how long that will take.

Per Jon Heyman: “The Twins have Zack Wheeler very high on their list of pitching targets. They are obviously not nearly alone in that regard.”

    A+ analysis right there. roll

The White Sox already scare me. 2021 and beyond I think the Central will be CHW and MIN battling it out. Rick Hahn’s made some good moves lately.

Man I’d be all over 5/85 if that’s true for Wheeler. It’s probably gonna me more like 5/100 or 5/115 though.

But that would give us Berrios/Wheeler/Odorizzi/../.. for ~$40MM. A generally competitive, serious about contending team could try to sign another big name on top of that and still have a ‘reasonable’ payroll.

We of course know that if they sign Wheeler, that’s probably all that’s coming. They’ll bring in a couple reclamation projects for the #4/#5 starters and rotate through with some of the young guys.

BUT, If I’m looking at our payroll correctly though, we only have THREE Vets(from a contract perspective) on the team: Cruz/Marwin G./Odorizzi. And we currently sit at ~$90M including Odo.

Sign Wheeler at ~20/year gets us to $110M. Boom, sign Strasburg at $30M and call it a day, who says no? That would squeak us into the top ten payrolls of the league and we’d be a WS contender.

If we get a fairly highly sought after starter I think it’s more likely we try to trade for another than sign another though.

I hope they get Wheeler and if they do I’ll be really interested to see if they’ll sign another legit pitcher. But I think you’re right that it’s more reasonable (for the top brass) to trade for another. Rosario and Thorpe for Mike Minor would be nice. Still hung up on him after I thought we might go after him at the deadline last year.

Rowson and now Shelton gone. Shelton hires as the manager of the Oirates. I honestly think the positive coaching of this team came mostly from Shelton. Rocco leaned on him on a lot of decisions.

Bummed about Shelton (and Rowson) but good for them. Hopefully Gibby can stay healthy and bounce back a bit but I won’t miss his laboring starts

Seems to me losing Rowson is a big blow. He was good, really good, for the bats.

He definitely was, but I think bringing in Nelson Cruz, one of the most professional, and prepared hitters in the league helped even more. I’ve read some reports that he had two or three players around his locker before games last year talking hitting and preparing for at bats before games. The players on this team have never had someone do that for them.

Say what you want about Mauer but Cruz is someone the young guys could look up to and learn from much more than Mauer. Unless they wanted to learn how to hit singles and double plays………

I honestly didn’t hate him. I just don’t think he did anything remarkable to help the team for all the fanfare he gets. Especially in the leadership department.

I’m getting more worried the longer we go without signing any arms. If they don’t sign one of the big 5 rotation guys out there by the winter meetings I think they are going to have a hard time getting any of them. The longer it goes the higher the price tag and the Twins will fade away once that happens. Sounds like it might already be happening with Wheeler.

In other news they haven’t tendered Cron yet either. I don’t know if I like losing him or not. He was injured most of last season but when he was healthy he swung the bat. He also saved our shortstop about 30 errors with some amazing picks on balls in the dirt at first base. Not sure Sano will be able to do that when they put him at first.

    **UDPATE**

    They are non tendering Cron

i’m guessing his often injured wrist (and the expectancy of injuring it again) made him expendable, maybe they expect Kiriloff to hopefully make the team this year or use Sano as a short term solution until he’s ready?

I agree, they need to make a move on a quality arm, this is looking more and more like they are waiting for the clearance sales to start up again….

Ken Rosenthal reported this morning that the Twins have offered Wheeler a 5 year deal but doesn’t seem to think it’s one Wheeler will take. Whether that’s because of the money or because he doesn’t want to come here, we’ll probably never know. Although I’ve heard a lot of speculation it’s over 100 mill. Just not as much as other clubs are offering.

They are however also very active with Bumgarner and Ryu which I would be ok with. Although their injury history is a concern.

Hamels also off the board. This market is going to start moving fast and I’m already worried the Twins are going to get left in the dust if they don’t make a move at the Winter Meetings. It’s just reality if they want a big name pitcher to choose the Twins over a major market team, they are going to have to pay extra for it.

    Yes we know…… coffee

Sounds like the Twins lucked out on the Sox losing out on Wheeler too. A report just said that they offered him more money than the Phils did but he still chose the Phillies. That would’ve been a huge signing for Chicago.

He ends up getting a hair under $24 mil AAV over the 5 year deal he wanted. Good for him. Reports indicate that Twins did make a 5 year offer, but in the end he wanted to stay on the East coast. Sounds like the chi sox offered a 5 year deal worth over $120 mil, more than what he accepted from the phillies, and he turned that down as well. Good for the Twins not to overpay, but at the same rate, you’re going to have to overpay for pitching at some point.

Bumgarner has already received major interest from Twins, white sox, and …. the yankees. Here we go again. crazy

I think it’s most concerning that Chicago offered more than we did on Wheeler. If they outbid us for some of the other top arms we’re screwed. Sounds like Wheeler wanted to stay near the east coast, but would other free agents rather live in Chicago or Minneapolis?

Could be really disappointing really fast if we don’t scoop up one of the remaining top of the rotation guys.

With this team I do think a trade is a good option as well, but was always hoping we’d trade for someone PLUS sign a good pitcher in FA.

They have to get Ryu or Bumgarner are it’s another failed offseason. They should be trying to get both. They have plenty of money.

They’re also being linked to a power bat from Japan and I swear to god if we sign another ballplayer from Asia before we sign a solid rotation guy I’m going to lose it.

I’m sure they’d sign a big free agent but they’re severely handcuffed by Mauer’s contract. Right? We can still use that right?

Is it sad that it would make me feel slightly better if that was still a legitimate reason……? lol

Twins in on Rendon, and move Sano to 1B? That’d be fun…
