I like the idea of a shortened season in the future for sure! 100-120 games no roid testing………LETS GO! It will likely never happen due to the cash flowing into the owners pockets and stats being manipulated. as fans, lets hope there isn’t some covid outbreak that will derail the shortened season…..I have my doubts but its basically day to day.

The 60 game season definitely makes the White Sox a scarier team.
Agreed. The fewer games there are means that much more variability. Hell, Nats were 4th in their division and 7 games back from the Phillies after the first 60 games last year Thanks to an injured Indians team, the Twins were up 10 games. Won’t be anything like that again this year. We’ll likely see a shocking team winning a division somewhere, just hope it doesn’t come from the AL Central! Fwiw, the Twins do have the weakest strength of schedule based on 2019 results in the league. WP% of just .448. Indians and W sox just behind MIN.
Crazy to think that every player that becomes covid positive throughout the year will miss a quarter of the season!
June 24, 2020 at 5:55 am #1952216I think it’s going to be very entertaining. Endurance and health will play a bigger role than normal.
Can’t wait, love having a ballgame on the radio when on the water.
June 24, 2020 at 7:40 am #1952233Just heard some of the rule changes.
Pithers can’t lick their fingers.
No spitting
Players cant touch the bases with their hands. That’ll most certainly change leadoffs on first & head first slides.
The no spitting rule will be broken before the first pitch reaches the plate.

Yeah I don’t think the hands touching bases will last very long. If they actually take leads people are going to dive back headfirst out of habit and muscle memory when a pick off attempt happens. Unless they aren’t allowing pick off attempts. No tobacco and no seeds either. I’d be going crazy if I was a player. That’s half the fun of the game! At this point I don’t care what it looks like as long as it’s baseball. Been far too long.

Can you catch a game on FM or stream thru 4g? My boat stereo does not have AM for some reason?
June 24, 2020 at 9:44 am #1952267We had our first game last night down here in Iowa, for the 6th thru 8th grade team I coach. No seeds and no spitting is about impossible. I would go thru a bag of seeds a night the last several years of coaching. I was craving some giants and a hot dog in the worst way around the top of the 3rd inning!
Glad to have baseball back, although this will be the first year in several I will not be attending a few games at Target Field, and that truly does sadden me. I love taking my family up there for a weekend of baseball.

Plenty of FM stations carry Twins games.

June 24, 2020 at 10:47 am #1952289If u can’t spit in baseball how in the world will there be a football season. Those guys in the trenches get sweat all over each other im sure not to mention they are all touching the same football.
I have to say seeing some baseball on TV would be refreshing right now

FM here in Nevis.
June 24, 2020 at 10:57 am #1952298The no spitting rule reminded me of Caddy Shack.
Don’t ya see that blood?! Well pick it up!June 24, 2020 at 11:04 am #1952303Who were the free agent pitchers the Pohlads missed out on this offseason? I’m looking for something more trivial to get upset about and 3-4 top end starters should be a big advantage in the shortened season.

They signed Joe Mauer to instruct pulling the ball and power hitting.

Is he a strength, conditioning, and physical therapist consultant too?
I was actually wondering when his name would be brought into this conversation.
June 24, 2020 at 6:03 pm #1952403I just heard the Polads are giving away $25,000 to the the first 20,000 people to the home opener.
Finally…they’re giving back.

Fair to assume your tongue is planted firmly in your cheek since there will be no fans?

Yes.
July 2, 2020 at 5:56 pm #1954263MLB.com has the Twins starting at #4 in the power rankings. I hope to hell they get to start and stay playing.
July 2, 2020 at 6:21 pm #1954265I just got done listening to the Gleeman and the Geek podcast and I’m a ton more excited now than I was before. In regards to your comment Mahto, when going by 2019 records the Twins have the easiest schedule this year. They should not only make the playoffs but that schedule should have them competing for a top seed.
They pointed out on the podcast that there are so many temporary rule changes this year that we’re literally going to be watching games and something will happen that makes us go “oh yeah, that’s different this year.” I’m excited. No DH. Speeding up extra innings. Sounds like they’ll be more aggressive on calling rainouts than waiting hours.
Trade deadline Aug. 31. Pineda comes back a day or two after that. It would be a very Twins thing to do to not make any trade deadline moves and just keep repeating “getting Pineda back is just like making a move.” But either way, that late trade deadline combined with a 60-games season is going to make this a lot of fun. Might as well give it hell this year and try and win it all.

Whether you like the rule changes, shortened season or not, there’s no denying it’s going to be entertaining and fresh. I have a hard time going off of last seasons’ schedule for the sole fact that the White Sox will be MUCH better and the Indians will be about the same as the team who we barely held off last year.
I do think they win the division and have a top seed. I love all the starting pitching we all of a sudden have but am interested to see how high the ceiling of the starting staff can be (other than just a bunch of #3 and 4 starters).

I’ve read that this years trade deadline is expected to be very weak. Mostly due to rental players only being on their teams for a month until the regular season ends.
Like mahto, I really like the Twins’ depth in their rotation this year. I’m very curious to see how Berrios does. He’s always been great in the first half and not so great in the second. Every year his velocity dips as the season drags on. After 60 games last year he was 8-2 and looking like the ace the Twins need him to become so desperately. Can the Twins get the best version of Berrios in the playoffs this year instead of would be late June in a normal season?

Right. So the notion is that you could be giving up money or treasured prospects for a very, very short while. One thing Gleeman and the Geek brought up is that, while that is true, we also don’t know what next year will bring either in regards to free agency since revenue will be way down. There are so many different factors and what-ifs I say just give ‘er hell and go for it and not think too much about all the variables.
Sidenote: Statistics will be weird; John Bonnes on KFAN wanted to put the over/under for the HR leader at 27.5. Stats just will not accumulate this year. HOWEVER…we do have a realistic shot to see an epic ERA or even a .400 hitter, because all they really have to do is ride a streak for 60 games. Asterisk smasterisk, I think that would be fun to see.
July 3, 2020 at 10:06 am #1954355Does a 60 game mini season really = a true World Series Champion?
While baseball would be nice what it will do to the statistical part of the game will suck. How will you feel about a Cy Young winner with 6 wins and 50 innings?

It will still count and the awards will be the same as other years. Sure, some will want an asterisk and other will always say “well it was only 60 games”, but the reality is this is all we have, so why take away from it?
July 3, 2020 at 11:18 am #1954361More then any other sport baseball is statistics comparing one player to another over a traditionally 162 game period. I understand there have been 154 games schedules, strike years, 163 games played. 60 games to me seems like college ball. But, as you say it’s all we have.
Sidetracking…I doubt the season and play-offs get completed anyway. The Virus will end this years schedule and maybe even delay the start of next year.

Agree, we won’t have to worry about it. I doubt there will even be a season.
July 3, 2020 at 3:20 pm #1954389Think I seen today Mike Trout is gonna opt out of season. Wish I could opt out of work. Guess you have to make millions before the risk of getting sick allows that.
July 3, 2020 at 3:44 pm #1954390I believe Trouts wife is pregnant with their first. Smart move on his part.
tbro16InactiveSt PaulPosts: 1170July 3, 2020 at 5:55 pm #1954398Trout hasn’t yet said he isn’t going to play. Said he’s still not fully comfortable with playing, but hasn’t made his official decision yet. He was practicing with the team today
