I’m in shock. I don’t even want him but I just can’t believe they made a splashy deal……..This club is going to HIT.
…..and they are going to have to……
I wasn’t in favor of the deal but i’ll wait to see what the terms are. They still need pitching but now we see where the money they saved on Sano went.
Now…….how to keep Buxton on the field.

Seriously. If Big Mike and Richard come back at the same level they were before their seasons ended last year this could end up being pretty good. Maybe even nab an impact pitcher at the deadline for once?
God I didn’t even like this move and now I’m trying to steal EPG’s lawn chair…..
4 year, $92 mill, with a 5th year option bringing it up to $100 million.
Makes me think there weren’t a lot of other teams willing to pay what he was asking for.

it will be the exact same process as always and the same results. The Twins will be in on a few of the bigger name Free Agents, “barely” lose out and sign a few guys off the scrap heap to make it look like they are trying. If this year didn’t teach you they have no intention of doing what it takes to take the next step, no year will.
Not so fast my friend! I heard 4 yr $92mil with a 5th year option was the deal. Would LOVE to see it front loaded but im not going to hold my breathe. Infield defense significantly improves. Lineup significantly improves. No more pitchign help on the way for a few years now, it’ll now likely rely on the development of guys like Dobnak, Thorpe, Smeltzer, Balazovic, Graterol, Duran etc in the immediate future (which it was probably going to anyway)

The more it dragged on the more it became apparent the Twins were the most likely suitor. It sounded like he really wanted to return to Atlanta but they weren’t offering the terms he wanted. Then the nationals signed like 3 infielders in 48 hours last week. Remember when he was reportedly demanding $110-120mil?
That’s it Falvine.

While I love what they have done with the lineup I still wish they would address the pitching in better ways than they have. Obviously they are forced to scrape the bottom of the barrel at the moment, and while I didn’t really want Donaldson, I think it does give the team the most bang for their buck at this point in the offseason.
For all the bats the Twinks have they still need to win enough games to get home field advantage. We can’t do the Viking thing and do a wild card bit.
Now that Sano is signed to a relatively team-friendly contract, trade him for starting pitching…
The Donaldson signing is very nice.
A trade for some starting pitching would be great. Still can’t believe Sano signed for that amount.
Keep Sano… Trade Donaldson… I would bet big $$ the next 4 years of Sano will make the next 4 of Donaldson look average.
If Donaldson hits .265 ish with 30 hr and plays defense for 3 years it could work. If he can stay healthy will be the question. It give the Twinks a window to get the pitching they need. He also gives them some thump if they lose or trade Cruz. Lots of possible moving parts. We will need to wait and see if they are done or if there is a corresponding move coming.
Just curious, which pitchers are going to be available next year?

LOL
I’m dustin off the lawn chair as we speak. I’m also thinkin about going up in the attic to see if I can find my old A2000. Might hang out at the Ballpark a little more this season and see if I can catch one of them balls that are going to be flying out of there at a record pace.
Kudos to the Twinkies on the signing, especially for the discounted price from what was originally reported! Now let’s add a couple $20m+ pitchers this year via trade or next and get serious about going all the way!!!

Not that many notable ones…..Strohman, Paxton and Kluber I think were the main ones if I’m remembering right….
pitching????? who gives a $hit when they got guys who can rake at dam near every position. it would have been great to land Thor last year but this is a HUGE signing and they totally redeemed themselves.
I think there’s as good a chance that Donaldson is a good signing as there is that he plays half time the next 4 years due to injury.
If you can’t trade Sano for true starting pitching, then trade him for ($3m less per year) Eduardo Escobar (the best 5 tool 3b in Twins history) and move Donaldson to 1b so he doesn’t get hurt as much..

Just like the Castro debate of the previous thread. The Twins are in no position to be trading major league talent away. And trading a guy they JUST signed long term? You cant be serious
They need Buxton and Arraez to produce. Donaldson is another mid average hitter, they need people on base when the RBI guys come up.
You can’t out-slug anybody all the way through the play-offs. You need starting pitching and not mediocre starting pitchers either.

Couldn’t agree more, Dutch. The nice thing about Donaldson is he walked at a ~15% clip last year and with the other bats in the lineup he could be those on-base RBI’s you reference.
This was a big signing and I’m allowing myself to be happy about it (gasp) but…they still need to upgrade SP to have any decent chance at a run in the playoffs. Still plenty of time in the offseason and before the July deadline to make a trade.
“And trading a guy they JUST signed long term? You cant be serious”
Not an uncommon strategy to sign younger players to longer term, team friendly contracts so that they are attractive trade bait later on. Yes, hard to think that $10m/year is cheap but it’s becoming so.
I think there is better than 50% chance Sano blows up in the next 3 years (weight, injury, off field stuff) and if the right deal were out there before a problem occurs I’d send him packing. Would we get a good starting pitcher for him, probably not… but a lot of teams will always be looking for a guy that can hit the ball 475 feet, even if the rest of the body of work needs liposuction..
I like the Donaldson signing! Pretty good deal for him I think, and I like the Sano extension as well.
Still absolutely need to do something for starting pitching, but this is definitely a positive step forward.
Our lineup is stacked. The majority of the lineup is locked up for the foreseeable future. Time to trade some of our coveted prospects for a nice starting pitcher. David Price is a name being thrown around. I’d take him and that contract for a prospect or two.
Donaldson is a great signing. Plus it sends a message that the team/management is pushing the chips in. Good for existing players and good for the fans. The signing will put my butt into a seat this summer.
Pretty excited about the Donaldson signing too. Our lineup looks incredible on paper right now. Need Buxton to stay healthy. I wouldn’t mind at all if they traded him (our #9 hitter) and could get pitching help. Either that or stand pat and get pitching help at the deadline.
Should be a fun season watching runs get scored, that is for sure!

You wonder, too, how much effect this will have on other teams and agents in their desire/attempt to work with the Twins FO on finding a fit. If I’m another FO or agent and I see this type of unconventional investment from the Twins, it makes me more likely to engage in talks and at least gauge interest.
